From a campaign of Rule the Waves 2

HMCS Alberta was Canada's first dreadnought, built in American yards and commisioned in 1911. She was fast for a battleship for her time, capable of 24 knots, and adequately armored but with a lackluster armament of only 6 13" guns. She was essentially an early attempt at a fast battleship, and there was some debate as to whether she was a battleship or battlecruiser originally.

She served for many years and through many wars. By the 50s, she was obsolete, but kept around only to provide defense of the Canadian coast if Canada found herself needing to fight in another naval war in Europe, so that none of the more modern battleships would need to be held back. There were also proposals to rebuild her as a carrier escort, with more modern machinery, so, once again, newer battleships wouldn't be needed for the role.

These ideas would come to naugt when Canada would, instead of fighting a European power like expected, they'd go to war with the United States, which forced Alberta to go back into service with the main Canadian fleet to defend the Canadian coast against the much more numerically superior American navy.

She would be sunk in June 1956 when an air-dropped torpedo would strike her in the magazine, and her obsolete torpedo protection was not able to contain the hit. Her magazines went up, and she quickly went under.
