You make a solid point, and I certainly don't disagree. Artillery appears to one of those weird ones where, similar to barracks, their placement tends to 'use up' a useful ranged slot. As you said, tucked at the back means it's all or nothing - if the line holds you're fine, but any break finishes it. On the flipside, I tended to find that at the front it'd overshoot (landing behind your troops) and would almost guarantee enemies clustering on you quickly.
I guess to refine the point a bit - My general aim is more giving artillery the awkward slots that aren't as useful for ranged towers. Those odd tucked corners with a smaller attack window. In essence a "give it the least useful tower spot for your ranged ones that isn't taken up by the barracks"
Thank for the other angle though - It's great to hear other tactics like this.
Of course, all of this goes out the window once the Tesla gets involved...
