Better Controller Steering – Progressively Reduced Steering Sensitivity

Description
Compatibility
Confirmed to work with 1.50

What is speed sensitivity?
  • at low driving speeds we want the steering wheel to turn fast, e.g. in tight turns, when we flip the controller stick fully left or right
  • at high driving speeds we want the steering wheel to turn very slow to be able to make subtle corrections
The game already does that. What's the problem?
We have only one setting available: the steering sensitivity you set in the game options.
  • when I decreased steering sensitivity to be able to make subtle corrections at high speeds, I found the steering speed at slow driving speeds to be painfully slow
  • when I then increased steering sensitivity again, I found the steering at high driving speeds again too sensitive and twitchy
I found it impossible to strike a balance that felt right.
What does this mod do?
As you can see in the chart above, I use a much steeper curve than the default settings. But maybe you spot the problem: A steep curve means that we hit 0 at some point. Zero means we would have absolutely no movement of the steering wheel at all. Imagine that: No steering at all until you slow again! Luckily, the game offers a config setting to request a minimum of steering input to always be effective, no matter the result of our calculation regarding the driving speed. So, I use a steeper curve, but let it remain flat at a certain minimum threshold.
Do you need this mod?
Not if you're perfectly fine with the steering with a controller. But then you have nothing to lose. Give it a try. Maybe you'll like it better. These settings are my personal preference. I have steering sensitivity set to about 50% in the settings. A little less for cabovers, a little more for longer chassis. It's absolutely fine if you like the default better.
Don't forget to set your stick deadzone
You should be able to produce very subtle input. Check the in-game controls settings. Watch the yellow bar when you move the stick as little as possible. Increase deadzone until you can bring up the yellow bar very slowly, without an initial "jump".

Heads up to anyone reading this, if you have been having issues with this working make sure you do what @mpie mentioned last year. It still works you just need to have it higher up than other physics mods on the load order.

Was trying to figure out what was wrong with mine and then saw their comment. Its all fixed for me after moving it higher up on my load order. I currently have it 2nd on my list, other physics mods still work as well.

Any chance you make one for the brake (left trigger) on controllers? Need something that brakes much easier and then comes on harder the closer the trigger is to fully pulled. The way it is now it's hard to brake easy unless you brake slider down ion game But when you do that, then you don't get to brake hard when you need to.

Keyboard Only Steering player.

Thank you very much for the mod. I have been struggling to find a suitable sensitivity for both Long Drives and Parking Maneuvers.

Hint For Keyboard Players (you can choose not to consider).
Set "Steering Animation Range" to 90 deg. That way you will (when in 1st Person view) know approximately how much your Front Wheels have turned and tweak the "Steering" settings value based on how fast the wheels are turning.
Do not worry about tweaking Steering Sensitivity more than 0.50. Even with higher values your Long Drives will still be smooth.
Respect the Road Speed Limit, it is there for a reason.
Use Cruise control and all its features available in game.

Happy Trucking.

Thanks for a great mod. I have been fighting the steering for a long time resulting in some accidents. As you did I kept adjusting the settings, but couldn't get it right. Now, thanks to your mod and can drive like I'm sober!

Working on 1.53. I'm using a controller and this made such a big difference!

So do I just set the game to default settings and install mod? Or am I setting up a particular set up? I did not see anything in description showing what the settings should be. Or does it not matter with this mod installed?
