Description
About
This map is a fantasy reimagining of the Australian bush, and my home state of Tasmania. The shape of the map is based on Port Arthur in south-east Tasmania. The rugged, sometime startlingly jagged hills of Tasmania, along with the more rolling hills and lowlands are represented here. Some references to other Tasmanian places can be found within the map, such as the Stanley Nut and the SS Lake Illawarra.

The map is great for both standard players and users of the 81 Tiles Mod. Outside of the standard tiles, I lowered the number of trees to save everyone on loading times, but I made sure to detail the entire mod for 81 Tiles players.

Rail, sea, plane, and road connections are all available, as well as all resources, and fish for Sunset Harbor players.

Networking is purposefully light, as my play style means I generally develop a highway system on my own time as a city grows.

Please thumbs up if you liked this map.

Context
Port Arthur is a World Heritage listed historic site in Tasmania, Australia. It was used as a convict penitentiary 1833 until 1853, along with the nearby Port Peur – which was used as boy’s prison for children as young as 9, from 1834 – 1848. Port Arthur was the site of the world’s third “panopticon”, a trial form of prison that involved long periods of complete quiet and social isolation.

Port Arthur had a reputation as a place at the end of the world, and an unescapable prison. It is separated from Tasmania’s mainland by shark filled waters, connected only by a small isthmus, guarded by a line of guard dogs and outposts. However, many tried to escape, such as one man who used a kangaroo skin to try and sneak past the guard line. The half-starved guards attempted to shoot the kangaroo for food, at which point he was forced to reveal himself and surrender.

After closure and because of the effects of the panopticon on its prisoners, an insane asylum was constructed at Port Arthur in 1863 to house the former prisoners who had become permanently unable to reintegrate into the population.

Port Arthur became home of a town called Carnarvon, until the 1930s, when it was declared a historic site. Over the next half a century, the state government repurchased the land it had sold when the prison closed. In the 1979s, Port Arthur reopened as a museum and historic site.

In 1996, the historic site was the location of Australia’s worst mass murder event in post-colonial history.

It can be visited today, and many of the original buildings can be toured, as well as Point Puer and the Isle of the Dead, where over a thousand prisoners, guards and their families are buried. Located on a deep-water bay, Port Arthur is able to receive many of the world’s largest cruise ships and is one of Tasmania’s most popular tourist attractions.

Thank you to the creators of the map theme (Mark Fire & Strictoaster), and pdelmo, whose tree assets made an Aussie map possible. BonBonB’s guides were incredibly helpful, so a big thank you to him.

In memory of the prisoners of Port Arthur.

Well done, as a fellow Tasmanian I salute you! It is indeed a place of great tragedy in real life.
