Introduction
Welcome to our guide on Early Game Food and what to look out for when it comes to stamina in the early game. If you are struggling to replenish your Health or Oxygen make sure to check out our other Early Game guides here on steam: https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2609429520 https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2616091361
Narnip, Kepple fruit & Gomble grapes
While exploring you will be able to find plants which will be your base for getting food. These plants are Narnip, Kepple fruit and Gomble grapes

Narnip
Narnips can be found in Open Planes and Wildlands biomes. They do not appear on the map, so keep your eyes open. They are a small orange plant with a pink top.
These do not respawn after being picked up.

Kepple fruit
Kepple plants can be found in Open Plains, Wildlands, Living Frostlands and Melting Valley Biomes. These plants can be harvested for Kepple fruit.

This is the only plant that can be moved and placed into a farm. You do that by digging it up with a shovel to get a withered Kepple plant. Then after planting it in a new location you drag and drop rich soil on it, for it to start supplying you with Kepple fruit.
Using multiple rich soils on a Kepple plant will evolve it to give you up to 3 Kepple fruit at a time.

Gomble grapes
Grapes can be found in Bleached sands, geode quarries and the Oasis biomes. You cannot dig up these plants, though they will keep growing Gomble Grapes.

All 3 of these can be cooked to increase how much stamina you get from them
Cooking
When you are trying to survive on Ketern it is beneficial to cook your food to reduce how much food is required to increase your stamina and health

Portable Stove is the first option for cooking that will be available to you. It is also a very handy tool as it allows you to cook while exploring and keeps you warm during the night and cold.

To cook with a stove deploy it on the ground by right clicking. Then drag the food you want to cook from your inventory onto the stove. On controller you will see a button for it.

The Oven will be your stationary cooking station. Most likely placed in your base as it needs electricity to function.

Having an oven in your base allows you to cook large amounts of food while you are exploring somewhere else.
Raw meat
Eating raw meat will increase your stamina in exchange for health. You should only do this in emergencies. Cooking any meat that has the word "raw" in front of it will make it more potent and you will no longer lose health from eating it.

Chitterling
Catching a Chitterling with a net and slaughtering it will supply you with Raw Chitterling meat which can then be cooked into Nuggets.

Urchin
Killing Urchins has a low chance of dropping raw leg muscles, which can be cooked into Cooked Urchin Legs

Crogs & Viperlisks
And last we have the bigger creatures you will encounter early in the game and that's Crogs and Viperlisks. These are not good sources for reliable food, because of how much effort it takes to kill them. But they do drop food which gives a large chunk of stamina and health if cooked.

Other alternatives
There are other creatures that will have a chance to drop meat, though they are usually not encountered until later on in the game and will therefore not be covered in this guide.
Preserving food
Food will decay over time and become Rotten food. To prevent food from rotting we have two options.

Refrigerator
We can research the Refrigerator schematic and build+power a fridge to prevent our food from rotting. This is good for bases where you are generating a lot of Kepple fruit, or you are saving your cooked Viperlisk meat for something special.

Natural Refrigerator
And option that I have seen people do is build their base in a Cold Biome. This comes with the difficulties of having to keep warm all the time. But food will not rot as fast when they're in a cold biome and you will then have a free refrigerator.
