Guide To Set-up OpenTTD (detailed) [73.1% complete]
By Edward_shooter
This guide will help you configure the game properly after a clean installation.

### work-in-progress ### (since 18 ‎April ‎2021)
I was getting sick almost constantly so I had abandoned this guide for a while.
This is a polished reupload, but some sections are still unfinished.

OpenTTD[en.wikipedia.org] (Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe) is an old game with many updates since 2004. As you might expect, the GUI is a bit "old-fashioned" when compared to modern titles.

But no worries! This guide will help you go through all the important settings step-by-step, as well as direct you to other useful sites for the fancy add-ons. Neat!

### Skip this section if this is your first install ###

Remember to backup your save files and configs, unless you want a clean install.

Basic Setup - "Game Options"
Highly recommend completing this section before starting a game.

This section is pretty straightforward.

1. On the Main menu, click the "Game Options" button.

2. Now you should see a menu like this.

  • Autosave
    └ I prefer "Every 3 months"
    1 tick = 0.030 seconds
    1 day = 74 ticks = 2.220 seconds
    1 month ≈ 66.600 seconds (≈ 1 minute)
    1 year ≈ 810.300 seconds (≈ 13.5 minutes)
  • Language
└ I will stick with "English(UK)" as some translations may cause confusion (for beginners)
  • Interface size
└ makes the buttons/icons and drop-down boxes larger (video demo) [1:30-3:49]
  • Font size
└ I don't recommend changing it via Game Options. Refer to Advanced Setup for details
  • Currency units
└ change it to whatever currency you'd like to use, or choose "custom" to make your own
  • Graphics
└ change it to your monitor's native settings, then enable "Fullscreen" and "Hardware acceleration"
  • Base graphics/sounds/music set
└ refer to Check Online Content for details
Basic Setup - "Check Online Content"
This is where you can download all the custom assets, such as AI, graphics, music, scenarios, etc.

Please note that the Original (TTD) Assets need to be imported manually due to copyright reasons (full guide).

3. On the Main menu, click the "Check Online Content" button.

4. Now you should see a menu like this.

5. As you can see, there is a lot to choose from, but the most impactful one is graphics.
(scroll down the menu or type "base graphics" in the search bar)

List of Available Base Graphics: (comparison video)
  • OpenGFX (default)[www.tt-forums.net]
    └ my personal favourite :)

  • NightGFX[www.tt-forums.net]
    └ night version of OpenGFX

  • zBase[www.tt-forums.net]
└ some people like its cleaner look

  • aBase[www.tt-forums.net]
└ a slightly different version of zBase

  • Original (TTD)[www.amazon.com]
└ the original texture from Transport Tycoon Deluxe
    <missing image>

6. Tick the square box on the left, then hit "Download". It may take 1-2 minutes.

7. Go back to "Game Options" and swap out your graphics!

Ta-Da! A brand new look :)
Basic Setup - "Settings"
This menu contains all of the advanced settings. The default values are pretty good, so you'll most likely tweak a few and ignore the rest... it's still better to have a look tho :/

8. On the Main menu, click the "Settings" button.

9. Now make the window larger by dragging the resize button.

10. Choose "Expert" in the "Category" drop-down box.

List of Recommended Settings:
  • Localisation
└ change it to whatever units you'd like to use
  • Sound > Vehicles
└ disable vehicle sounds to enjoy the music
  • Interface > Viewports > Viewport scroll behaviour
└ I prefer using "Move map with RMB"
  • Interface > Viewports > Show path reservations for tracks
    MAKE SURE THIS IS ENABLED!!!
  • Interface > Construction > Link landscape toolbar to rail/road/water/airport toolbars
└ enabling it makes nuking construction easier
  • Company > When dragging, keep fixed distance between signals
└ enabling it makes life easier
  • World generation > Road vehicles
└ change it to whatever side you drive on
  • World generation > Automatically pause when starting a new game
└ enabling it makes the world stop for you
List of "Hardmode" Settings: (for experienced players)
  • Disasters/Accidents > Disasters
└ it's fun to watch the world BURN[wiki.openttd.org]

Congratulations!
You have almost reached the end. Consider reading the Advanced Setup and In-game settings to further enhance your gaming experience!
Advanced Setup - "Font"
Advanced Setup - "Key Binds"
Locate "hotkeys.cfg"

Probably bind "F12" to another key, because Steam already uses "F12" for taking screenshots.

In-game Settings - "Transparency"
Settings that are frequently used during gameplay.

----- Show/Hide Specific Infrastructures -----

HOLD Gear Icon ---> show/ hide specific infrastructures

<unfinished>
In-game Settings - "Volume & Music"
----- Adjust Volume and Music Playlist -----

HOLD Speaker Icon ---> adjust volume and change radio

< Temporary Drafts >
Please ignore this section for now. Some information below still needs testing to verify.

=== Settings ===
1. Settings changed through the toolbar's gear icon (when a saved game is loaded) will only affect that particular save locally. Similarly, global settings changed through the main menu will only affect newly generated saves, but not old saves. Exceptions to this rule are transparency options and music options, which are shared between all saves.
2. Interface > Viewports > Viewport scroll behavior (Move map with RMB)
└ Some OpenTTD controls are outdated and weird to use... so try this instead!
3. Enable "realistic train acceleration"
https://wiki.openttd.org/en/Archive/Manual/Settings/Realistic%20acceleration
4. Change "steepness of slope"

(see more info)[wiki.openttd.org]
5. More "Hardmode" Settings
- Accounting > Inflation (On)
└ Are we in Vietnam?
- Accounting > Infrastructure maintenance (On)
└ Train signals somehow cost more than running trains...
- Accounting > Running costs (High)
└ Total income: -$1,000,000 credits
- Accounting > Construction costs (High)
└ Made of Antimatter™
- Accounting > Interest rate (4%)
└ Red numbers = Certain death
- Disasters/Accidents > Recessions (On)
└ The Great Depression gives you great depression...
- Environment > Cargo distribution > Distribution mode for passengers (asymmetric)
└ Total income: -$1,000,000 credits
- Vehicles > Physics > Enable wagon speed limits (On)
"Train #1 looks too intense for me!"
- Vehicles > Physics > Plane speed factor (1/4)
└ Admit it, planes are just overpowered
6. More "Masochist" Settings
- Vehicles > Physics > Weight multiplier for freight to simulate heavy trains (>1)
└ Either you hate trains or yourself
- Limitations > Maximum length of trains (max: 64)
└ We call these "Mammoth trains"[wiki.openttd.org]

Some may also choose to set a low initial loan, low subsidy multiplier, normal vehicle breakdowns, symmetric cargo distributions; use the original train acceleration model; allow no actions when paused; etc. However, I think those settings add little value to the gameplay but annoyances.

=== Transfer Old Files ===
Savegames, screenshots, etc are saved relative to the config file (openttd.cfg)
currently being used. This means that if you use a config file in one of the
shared directories, savegames will reside in the save/ directory next to the
openttd.cfg file there.
If you want savegames and screenshots in the directory where the OpenTTD binary
resides, simply have your config file in that location. But if you remove this
config file, savegames will still be in this directory (see notes in
section 4.2 'OpenTTD directories')
Savegames will be relative to the config file only if there is no save/
directory in paths with higher priority than the config file path, but
autosaves and screenshots will always be relative to the config file.
Unless the configuration file is in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/openttd, then all
other files will be saved under $XDG_DATA_HOME/openttd.

OpenTTD Manager should work on the Steam version of OpenTTD, but the game files will be updated automatically when a new update is released on Steam.

idk :( I'm moving to another country so I don't have free time for writing guides... the good thing is that the most important part of this guide (the original scope) is complete, it's just the minor details, such as pictures, aren't filled in yet.

when will be 100% complete ;`(
