How to install the DOS graphics/sound effects/music
By Flytrap
This is a short guide to make the game look and sound like the original version, which in my opinion, is THE way to play this amazing game!

Note: You need a copy of transport tycoon deluxe. Its not my business how you obtain it.

Alternate file location
Not sure which version started allowing this, but as of version 13.4 you can most definitely just create a 'gm' folder (without the quotation marks) at Documents/OpenTTD and dump every file you need in there and the game will pick it up.

The files you need are:
For the graphics:
TRG1.GRF
TRGC.GRF
TRGH.GRF
TRGI.GRF
TRGT.GRF

For the sounds:
sample.cat

And for the music:
Either GM.CAT or gm_tt00.gm - gm_tt21.gm

Afterwards just select them in the game options
Installing the graphics!
Look into the folder of the original game. You are looking for:
TRG1.GRF
TRGC.GRF
TRGH.GRF
TRGI.GRF
TRGT.GRF

Once you have found these 5 files, just copy them into the same folder, where openttd.exe is. Afterwards, launch the game, go to game options, Base graphics Set, and select 'original_dos'!
Installing the sound effects!
Look into the folder of the original game. You are looking for a file called: sample.cat

Once you found the file, copy it into the 'baseset' folder in your openttd directory. Then launch the game, go to game options, Base sounds set, and select 'original_dos'!

In theory the sample.cat from the windows version has more/newer sound effects, but i cant tell the difference.
You cant have both installed because the name would conflict then, so i suggest you use the windows version.
Installing the music!
Okay, this is probably the hardest part, but bear with me. Depending on which version of the game you have (DOS/WINDOWS), its going to be different.

First of all, create a folder called 'gm' in the root directory of the game (where openttd.exe is).

If you have the DOS version, then you need to locate 'GM.CAT', and copy it into the 'gm' folder you just created. Launch the game as before, game options, Base music set, and select 'original_dos'!

If you have the WINDOWS version, find the 'gm' folder in your original copy of the game, copy the files inside into your 'gm' folder that you just created. Launch the game, go into game options, Base music set, and select 'original_windows'!

In my experience, the windows soundfiles are slightly louder, but thats the only real difference between them, as far as i can tell

@Flytrap already reached out to them; looks like a possible bug that they'll have to deep dive into at a later date.

@VipeNess I didnt. I just chose between them, and sadly i cant help you have both, im not a developer of OpenTTD. You'll have to bug them so they make the game able to recognize both at the same time

@Flytrap I can't both to show up at the same time in the options for sfx. How did you do it?

@Flytrap Looking forward to seeing your video.

@VipeNess Admittedly, i completely forgot to check the differences between the two, but looking at them now in a hex editor, the windows version seems to have a few additional sound effects, like 'wave0072.wav.BANK' and 'wave0031.wav..SPLAT', and some sound effects seem to be altered/modified.

I have played the DOS version my entire life, and i automatically took the sample.cat file from the DOS folder. Giving both a quick listen in-game, i cant tell the difference, but in theory, the WIN version of sample.cat *should* have more/newer stuff. It may also be slightly louder, not sure.

Will upload video comparisons in a bit

This was fun to explore, thanks for the curveball!

How do you install both SAMPLE.CAT (original_dos) and sample.cat (original_windows) for SFX? They both share the same file name and can't be in the same directory.
