in theory that can be fixed without deleting it, by finding out what part in the vmt triggers it.
sometimes selfillum causes connections to fail.
But its the same sort of data that would prevent you from joining other servers.
Such as models with different hbox, bbox, cbox values, script mods, or model files that have incorrect checksum values.
So i'm assuming one of those mods is not compatible because of that.
Can your friends tell you what error they see in the ingame console (or as a popup) when the connection fails? It should shed some light as to why it won't work.
First, check you're actually using the proper game in the packing tab. Cause you can pick which game, and therefore which vpk.exe will be used.
Then head over to the "Set up Games" tab (like the error tells you to do) and check for that game you're trying to pack for. All the paths should be set up to the correct had drive and all.
L4D1 has a few mods that the addon system doesn't even recognize as a valid mod
