BR Class 51 Super Deltic

Proposed BR Class 51 Super Deltic locomotive. In the 1960s, design work was being done on an enhanced Deltic-type diesel locomotive. Little information is available, but the final design intended to fit two supercharged Deltic 18-cylinder engines into a Class 50 body-shell (itself the result of work on an enhanced Deltic), which would have to be stretched by 2 m. The engine itself was a tried type which saw extensive service with the Royal Navy in its supercharged configuration and would have to be down-rated for use in a locomotive. The final product would have produced 2300 hp, for a total output of 4600 hp (3430 kW). Top speed was suggested to be 200 kph (125 mph). BR was about to place an order when procurement was halted in favour of the APT, which itself was cancelled in favour of the Class 43 HST.
