The Soviet 8th Guards Army and 1st Guards Tank Army had broken through at the Fulda Gap behind schedule and were determined to make up lost time. This led to a less than cautious advance down the A66 Autobahn and the Federal Highway 276 as they drove on to Frankfurt. Many NATO positions were bypassed and avoided and left to wither on the vine as the Soviet juggernaut rolled on. These bypassed units sometimes would try and break through and hook up with other NATO formations, but often these units would revert to guerrilla warfare and would strike the Soviet supply columns as they raced to catch up with the bulk of the Soviet 8th Army. One favorite location that several such ambushes were set up was just outside Bad Soden-Salmunster along the A66. Wide-open fields of fire allowed NATO units to hit fast and melt back into the surrounding woods.
