After having firmly entrenched themselves in a tight perimeter surrounding the British holding the highway bridge at Arnhem, the Germans began to make probing attacks against the British. Elements from Kampfgruppe Euling took up positions in the Saint Walburgis Church to observe the British. Colonel Frost learned of this move and realized the threat it possessed. He dispatched a mixed group to capture the church. The Germans recognized the threat this church posed to the British and dispatched reinforcements as support, including a Panzer. A sharp and vicious fight broke out that included hand-to-hand combat before the British managed to throw the Germans back.
