History:
The region is the site of an ancient human settlement, dating back to the Neolithic (beginning of the 5th millennium BC). Traces of several villages from this period have been discovered in the region. Remains of the Chalcolithic have been discovered in the city center. The main settlement of the Thracian Serd tribe was on the site of present-day Sofia; their culture seems marked by a strong influence of the Celts. The region was conquered by the Romans in AD 29, who made Serdica the capital of the province of Dacia. In the 3rd century, under Aurélien, the Romans built thick walls around the city. In 441, the city was taken and pillaged by the Huns. It was rebuilt by the Byzantine emperor Justinian, under the name of Triaditsa. In 809, the city was conquered by the Bulgarians and it received the name of Sredets. It is quickly considered as one of the most important feudal cities of the first Bulgarian Empire. In 1382, it was taken by the Ottomans who made it the capital of the province of Roumélie. In 1879, following the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-1878, Sofia became the capital of the Principality of Bulgaria. It quickly changes its face, transforming itself into a modern western metropolis.
