Colony Ship Crash

You feel the rumble of ripping plasteel as your escape pod is violently unmoored from the colony ship by superheated atmosphere. "Warning. Sub-orbital trajectory. Warning. Sub-orbital trajectory." the pod's rudimentary AI repeats senselessly. Through the narrow window of the pod you see shattered pieces of the colony ship spreading in a blazing arc of orange over the immense lapis curve of the planet's horizon. Weaving among the wreckage you notice the contrails of other escape pods plunging to the surface. Others made it too. The pod groans and the vibrations abate as the pod normalizes to terminal velocity and penetrates the lower atmosphere. "Brace for deceleration burn." You remember the ship's AI saying a moment before the crushing force of the landing rockets smash you back in to the shock pad, causing you to pass out...
