About this guide
Greetings fellow explorers,

If like me, you want to understand the puzzles and not just solve them through trial & error or by looking up the answer then I hope you find this guide useful.

The Myst Island library books have been added into this guide so that they can be read at leisure without needing to start the game.

There is now a section for maps which have been taken from Myst:Master Edition. They are also included in the appropriate Age section.

To help new explorers get started, go to the section ~ GETTING STARTED ~

Objectives
Overview
  • Starting on Myst Island, solve the puzzles to open the portals to each of the 4 Ages (Stoneship, Selenitic, Mechanical, Channelwood).
  • Explore each of these Ages to find a red & blue page.
  • Return to the Myst Island library to place these pages into Sirrus's and Achenar's prison books.
  • The 1st page is next to their respective book in the library at the start.
  • Obtaining the 6th (and final) page is part of the alternative endings.

The Pages
There are 6 red and 6 blue pages to locate and place into the prison books.

OLDER VERSIONS Only allow one page to be picked up at a time.
LATEST VERSION Both pages can be picked up and carried together from any Age.
Link ~ Comments from the devs.
  • They can be retrieved in any order.
  • Once you have clicked on a page it can not be deselected but it can be swapped with another.
  • There are multiple endings depending on which of these pages have been retrieved.
  • When placing the page into the books, listen carefully to what is being said.

The Portals
The portals from Myst Island connect to different Ages (lands) via specific linking books.

>>> It is advised that a SAVE be done before advancing through these portals as the new Age will need to be solved to enable a return to Myst Island. <<<

I recommend preparing all the portals on Myst Island before advancing through to another Age.
Use the portals to (Stoneship, Selenitic, Mechanical, Channelwood) in any order but Rime Age needs to be done last as it is part of the alternative endings.

1. The Beginning ~ Myst Island

2. The Marker Switches

They need to be switched on (lever up)
to enable access to the map in the library.

3. The Fore-Chamber

Enter the Fore-Chamber at the docks

Imager Pool


Open the Imager Panel and enter 08 (number of Marker Switches).


Press the front button on the Imager Pool to retrieve the warning message from Atrus
He refers to the books in the library and the tower.


4. The Library


Wall Map

When a Marker Switch is on/up that area is highlighted on the map.
Click the white/red button to move the beam to one of the 4 positions, this rotates the tower.
Refer to The Tower chapter on how to gain access via the corridor behind the bookcase.

Bookcase

Most of the books are burnt but look for the 5 Ages and the book of fireplace codes.
The complete book set is in this guide for you to browse without needing to start the game.
They are full of clues and backstory. Take notes and screenshots.

Left Shelf

Put the page (1 of 6) into the Red Book and listen carefully to Sirrus

Right Shelf

Put the page (1 of 6) into the Blue Book and listen carefully to Achenar

Fireplace

This is used for the alternative endings.


5. The Tower
Tower Corridor

Click on this painting in the library.
It triggers the bookcase to go into the floor and reveal the corridor to the tower.
The library door closes.

Window Views

Go up the ladder opposite the lift.
The view shows the direction of the beam on the library map.

The Fore-Chamber

Enter the code 40 into the Imager Panel.


Press the front button on the Imager Pool to see snow covered mountains.


Press the back button on the Imager Pool to see the Imager Panel change.

Enter the access code from the Rime Age book.

Return to the library to see a raised pedestal with the linking book to Rime Age.

Arrival

The Telescope

Follow the steps and walkway to the top of the rock.


Look through the telescope. Move the dial to see the lighthouse at 135.

The Water Pump
Each of the 3 buttons drains a specific area.
  • Left = Ships cabin leading to the portal
  • Center = Both tunnels in the rock
  • Right = The lighthouse
An area is re-flooded by pressing one of the other buttons.

The Lighthouse
Use the generator to turn on the power for the tunnel lights.

Drain the lower area then go down the steps to see a chest.

Open the valve to fully drain the chest then close the valve.

Re-flood the lighthouse.
Use the key to open the floating chest and remove another key.


Use the key on the padlock at the top of the ladder then enter the area above.

Turn the handle on the generator until the battery is fully charged.


Drain the lighthouse again.

The Tunnels
There are 2 of them, one either side of the stone steps on the ship.
The tunnel on the left (opposite the cabin door) leads to Sirrus's room.
The tunnel on the right (opposite the bow) leads to Achenar's room.
Part way down there is side tunnel which links the main tunnels together.

The linking tunnel & compass

Open the panel to access the side linking tunnel.

Follow the tunnel.

Both linking tunnels connect here at the compass.
North = 0 therefore SE = 135
Press the SE button on the outer edge.
The compass lights will come on and also in the ships cabin.
If the incorrect button is pressed the battery in the lighthouse will need to be recharged.

The Left Tunnel
At the far end is Sirrus's room.

The fabric pattern is in the library book!

Mechanical Age & Return to Myst Island ~ PART 2
Rotate the fortress to access the 2 islands shown on the map.
PREPARATION
Before rotating the fortress do the following:
> Align the Lift
> Use the lift to access the real rotation levers
> Practise on the Fortress Rotation Simulator in Achenar's room

> Align the lift
This only needs to be done once.
At the back of Sirrus's and Achenar's room are exits to a linking corridor.
Half way along is a side corridor with a red button at the entrance.

Side corridor

Press the red button to reveal a staircase

Note the diagram next to the lever

Move the lever up to align the diagram
Go back up to the corridor and press the red button to close the stairs.

> Use the lift

Go to the end of the corridor and enter the lift

Press the up arrow

When the lift stops, press the middle button. Beeping will start for a couple of seconds.
Get out of the lift. When the beeping stops the lift will go down showing a device with 2 levers just like the simulator in Sirrus's room.
LOOK BUT DON"T TOUCH THE LEVERS

Press the red button to move away from the device and the lift door will return.
Press the down arrow to return to the corridor.

Return to Achenar's room and approach the simulator.
Things to note:
  • The position of the large pointer (South)
  • 3 small arrows (West North East)

Look at the map.
If the walkway from The Sunken Gear Island is South then the 2 islands are East and North


Practice moving the pointer to the different positions.
Move the left lever up to unlock the device.
Move the right lever up to move the pointer to the desired position.
It takes approx 2 seconds to move the pointer to the next position moving anti-clockwise.

2 seconds to East position

+2 seconds to North position


Rotate the Fortress
The simulator was for practice only and has no bearing on the real device.
Return to the lift and and levers.
Operate the levers on top of the lift as on the simulator to rotate the fortress to the different positions with the following results.

~ Explore this Age during daylight ~
Navigation can be tricky in the dark, even with the torch.

In addition to the initial walkway on the ground there are 2 levels of paths among the trees.
I'll create some maps at a later date, but in the meanwhile I'll just have to use words and pictures. Just in case you get lost and want to restart a section I would recommend saving often.




Ground Level

Walkway Pipes
The pipes channel water from the windmill pump to various devices and the 3 elevators.

Some of the pipe junctions have levers that change the direction of flow of water.
The sound of water flowing through the pipes can be heard.

Windmill Island
This is where the water is pumped into the pipes on the walkways.

Follow the path to the top of the island. Turn the valve on the pipe to start the flow.

Sunken Bridge & Telescopic Pipe
This enables access to the Myst Island tree portal later on.


Move the pipe levers as necessary to ensure the water flows from the windmill pump to the sunken bridge lever. Operate the lever to raise the bridge. Continue along the walkway to the far end. The portal tree elevator can be seen on the left in the distance.


Turn the handle to extend the telescopic pipe to connect to the other side.

Elevator ~ To 1st tree level

Move the pipe levers as necessary to ensure the water flows from the windmill pump to the elevator. Enter, close the door, pull the lever to operate.



1st Tree Path Level


Go to the hut with the door lever.
Pull the lever and see the door open in the distance.


This elevator goes to the 2nd tree level.
Go down and open the door at the base of the spiral stairs.
These steps can be used to move up and down the levels.
Move the pipe levers as necessary to ensure the water flows from the windmill pump to the door at the base of the spiral steps.
Return to the top of the spiral stairs, and go to the elevator.
Enter, close the door, pull the lever to operate.



2nd Tree Path Level

Follow the walkway behind the lift.

Arrival

Turn around and walk towards the far building.
Enter the side door.

Building

Look at the map on the wall, cold furnace, alcove with the Myst Island linking book and the frozen door.


To start the furnace turn the lever outside and the press the button on the furnace.


As the room starts to warm up the walls change colour.
The side door unfreezes and can now be opened to reveal a corridor.
Walk to the far end and enter the lift.

Observation Tower

Press the up arrow.

The observation balcony.

Choose any colour then pull the lever.

Press the red button on the left panel to rotate the lift to reveal a small chamber.

The vault is located in very plain view on the Island of Myst, and access can be achieved very easily if the simple instructions are followed.
First, locate each of the Marker Switches on the island. Turn every one of these switches to the "on" position. Then go to the dock and as a final step turn the Marker Switch there to the "off" position.



The door can now be opened.

After some explanation and consideration Atrus goes to Myst Island.
When he returns to D'ni, he says that Achenar and Sirrus will no longer be a problem.
In appreciation for retrieving the white page, Atrus wrote additional information into the Rime Age library book so that the Age is now available to visit.

Fuckin' the letter at the start ... I spent a good hour wandering the island collecting as many bits of info as I could but just couldn't put it together, I finally caved and look up a guide only to discover I'm blind and missed the game explicitly telling me the first steps lmao

It's been a while since I last played and wrote this guide so trying to remember back.
Some of their dialogue is just static noise so don't worry if you are unable get every word they say. I too have hearing issues and struggled with this.

Your solution to the Compass in the Stoneship Age was visual (135 degrees in the telescope is SE, so press the SE bulb on the compass. Makes sense). My mind thinks in numbers, which makes some of these puzzles harder for me, but this one didn't take too long. I came to the solution like this: there are only 32 bulbs, but 360 degrees. So I took 135/360*32=12. I counted to the 12th bulb and it worked. Your answer probably makes more sense, but there are a few of us "numberphiles" who got to the solution a little differently. I just thought your answer was funny because I didn't think of it that way.

Clock Tower 221 wasn't well explained. You need to hold down one of the levers to move the middle gear independently of the others.
