The majority of your base layout is tucked inside a protected bunker, however your core is exposed at the front of the base. There are two weapon bays: one for horizontal weapons and one for vertical weapons or missiles. Weapon bays are behind portals and indestructible blast doors. You start with a large windmill farm, though you must connect to it first, and you have plenty of room for mines.

Your weapon bays and portals don't light up until you get connected to your windmill farm, so do that as soon as possible. You start with lots of metal protecting your core. Consider selling this to get some resources back for a quick start on economy and devices. However, don't leave yourself too vulnerable. While the bases are large, there is finite space for weapons, so it's recommended to build the heaviest weapons you can to effectuate the most damage per shot. The distance between enemies is fairly vast. Expect swarm and/or nuke missiles, but they can be easily mitigated with anti-air weapons in front of your core due to the distance. Obviously, you want to beat down on their core, but also look for opportunities to fire into enemy blast doors to destroy their weapon bays for a strategic setback.
