History:
Sofala is considered the main port of the Monomotapa Empire, on the Sofala River, in the province of the same name, in Mozambique. It was founded by Somali merchants and sailors. The Buzi River connects Sofala to the domestic market in Manica, and through there to the fields of Great Zimbabwe. During the 10th century, Sofala asserted itself as a small commercial port and became part of the regional trade network. Important hub of the gold trade, the city came under the domination of the Sultanate of Kilwa until the 15th century and the arrival of the Portuguese. Its economic activity then decreases, the city shrinks and leaves few visible vestiges in the modern city.
