z_population is the best way, but it is hidden by default. Check out ProdigySim's "recording_helpers" on GitHub.
What is your best advice/method for changing the default population to another place name? I also found out z_population is non-existent, as it might be for L4D1 only.
I've enabled comments to the guide, so you can do it there.
I can't seem to comment on your guide but there's a few missing details I want to forward, may I do it here?

I've made a guide that will show which populations are used on official campaigns.

Thanks for the reply! But it didn't help clarify what places use default and shared populations and seemingly unused ones such as Riverbank_police, Riotpolice_l4d1 and maybe Ceda?
I wanted to edit the existing populations since editing the navigation meshes would conflict with a favorite mod of mine. Knowing what populations are used in official campaigns and a small description of where they are within the map would be of huge help.
The Valve Developer wiki's page on populations (linked below) can help you.
Do you have any advice as to how or where I could tell which populations are used or unused? I have a hard time telling which one is for which part of a campaign.
