Dublin and South Eastern Railway (No Industry)

Description
On the 13th May 1837, the first railway in Ireland opened - the Dublin and Kingstown Railway, which connected the city centre of the capital with the nearby new port of Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire). It wasn't long before the railway mania exploded, and there was a proposal to extend this line to Dalkey, originally using the atmospheric system, which opened in March 1844. The next extension was the Dublin and Wicklow Railway, who bought the Dublin and Kingstown Railway, and in July 1854 extended the line to Bray, and to Wicklow the following year. The railway renamed to the "Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford" Railway in 1860. Following this, they kept building southwards, to Enniscorthy, and finally to Wexford in 1872. The railway built 3 branch lines - to an alternate terminus in Dublin, to Shillelagh and to Waterford.

The Great Southern and Western Railway first opened between Dublin and Carlow on 4th August 1846, with the ultimate goal of reaching Cork. The rest of this railway will be covered in another map, however they opened major branch lines to Kilkenny, Waterford and Rosslare. The two companies competed on trains between Dublin and Waterford / Wexford.

Following the creation of the Irish Free State, the government wanted to merge all the railways whose lines were entirely in that country. the Dublin and South Eastern Railway was mostly British owned, so wanted to instead merge with the Irish Great Northern Railway, whose lines were in Ulster. Instead, they were forced to merge with the Great Southern and Western Railway to form the Great Southern Railways.

A lot of the branch lines in the region closed due to lack of usage, however today there is still inter-city trains between Dublin and Waterford / Wexford, and commuter trains connecting the Dublin area, however the Waterford - Rosslare line closed in 2010.

This map covers the region of the Dublin and South Eastern Railway entirely, as well as the Great Southern and Western Railway's Dublin - Waterford line, and their mainline as far as Thurles.

This version of the map contains no industries.
