At the beginning of the story, it shows the protagonist, Hodaka Morishima, on a boat, fleeing his city towards Tokyo. The reason why he ran away from his home is not directly spoken, but it is said that the character felt suffocated by his old life and by his parents. On this vessel, Hodaka was almost thrown into the sea during a storm, however, he ends up being saved by Keisuke Suga, a character who will be relevant during the film's plot.

Upon his arrival in Tokyo, he suffers several difficulties because he has no documents and is a minor, which also hinders him to find some source of income to support himself. Spending time in the city, he finally gets a job with a man who had previously helped him - the same man on the boat - with which he gets a small payment along with food and housing. In this new house, where an uncle, Keisuke Suga, and his niece, Natsume Suga, live, he has busy days for a while.

No começo da história, mostra o protagonista, Hodaka Morishima, em uma embarcação, fugindo de sua cidade em direção a Tóquio. Não é falado de maneira direta o motivo de ter fugido de sua casa, mas é citado que o personagem se sentia sufocado pela sua antiga vida e pelos seus pais. Nessa embarcação, Hodaka quase foi arremessado para o mar durante uma tempestade, porém, acaba sendo salvo por Keisuke Suga, personagem que terá relevância durante o enredo do filme.

Com sua chegada em Tóquio, ele sofre diversas dificuldades por estar sem nenhum documento e ser menor de idade, o que o atrapalha também a conseguir alguma fonte de renda para se sustentar. Passado um tempo na cidade, ele consegue, finalmente, um emprego com um homem que o havia ajudado anteriormente ─ o mesmo da embarcação ─, com isso, ele consegue um pequeno pagamento juntamente à comida e moradia. Nessa nova casa, que mora um tio, Keisuke Suga, e sua sobrinha, Natsume Suga, ele tem dias bem agitados por um tempo.
