Combat (always sprint challenge).
Day 1 If you are caught outside use wooden frames to get to safety. You will get the majority of kills in buildings. Try to avoid fighting the lone zombies moving around outside as much as possible, they hit very hard and you don't.

Always have a drink in your toolbelt in case you need a boost to your stamina.

Doors are your shield

Time your attacks, wait until they hit the door then open and use the power attack on them, if they fall down use this opportunity to attack them. If not close the door and repeat the process.

I find the easiest thing to do is place a block in front of the door and use a bow to get their attention.

Always be aware of your surroundings make sure you can escape to safety, make use of frames.

The primitive bow is good for drawing attention and revealing spawn closets.

On lower difficulties you can avoid combat perks, on insane they make a huge difference, put a point into pummel pete or skull crusher.

Parkour perk allow you to fall from higher distances and at level 3 allows you to jump higher great for getting away from enemies.

If you're using any base design that forces zombies into corridors the Penetrator perk works well because it goes through multiple enemies.

Shotgun slugs obliterate harder enemies like radiated zombies. It's worth putting a few points into the Boomstick perk for the 6 second stun effect.

Use stamina reducing mods for your tools and weapons.
Early game healing.
Boiled meat provides 15 points of healing, grilled meat provides only 5 points of healing. Eat the grilled meat when you are not in need of healing. Try to save painkillers for the concussion debuff.

First aid bandages will be your main healing item because they are cheap and easy to make. Try to get some Aloe Vera from the desert region asap to start growing it or find it in loot, POIs. You will need 1 point in Physician and a point in Living off the land.
Vending machine candies.
Eye Kandy
Save for locked chests, safes and the buried treasure chests. I keep one for horde nights for the dropped yellow loot bags. It's best to clear a building first then take these because of the short duration.

Jail Breakers
Early game I mark the location of safes, locked chests and come back when I have jail breakers. I use a iron pick on the small 2500 hit point safes, use some Eye Kandys for best results.

Skull Crushers
Use these for a large POI and make sure to save one for the horde night if you melee the zombies.

Hackers.
Use when you wrench a lot of cars or salvaging in a large POI.
Horde Base.
The AI will look for the path of least resistance to you, use this to your advantage.

If you make a four sided base with 3 sides of concrete and one of flagstone they will attack the flagstone side, being able to direct their path is one of the reasons why corridor bases are so powerful.

This is the design I use.

A good combination is to place dart traps on each side of the electric fence, they are stunned and the dart traps do a ton of damage.

This is another effective design.

Early game base design. build on top of other buildings.

use flagstone blocks instead of the iron bars until you can make them.
