Common Mistakes.
In the beginning build up to ten houses! You don't have to house all you settlers, if you house everyone your population will get out of control. Settlers will only raise children when they live in a house, they do not raise children in the shelter, build houses slowly after the first ten.

Building radiation suits in the beginning, this is a waste of resources concentrate on making Activated Carbon Masks after season 20. (Limit to neck scarfs using the "limitation of protective clothing" option at the bus wreck and save the activated carbon masks for later.) Use the radiation overlay to keep informed of radiation levels.

Season 100 I've only needed to make a few Radiation Suits for expeditions.

Make sure to have a good supply of herbs, this will keep your settlers healthy.

Don't spend all your time trying to clear radiation from your settlement, worry about farms and move hunter work areas to less radiated places. The first level of protective clothing is enough for your settlers in the beginning.

Be aware of building fishing hut's and Wells to close together this will reduce their efficiency.

Place your Jetty and cistern like this for optimal water collection. Cistern entrance facing the jetty, well entrance facing the cistern.
Build Order
Don't forget to use the gather wood, scrap etc tasks in the beginning.

Two 8x16 or 10x10 farms (assign 1 setter to each farmer).
Jetty.
Cistern (2 water carriers). Keep an eye on your water reserves, assign more carriers as needed.
Well (1 well keeper).
Fishing Hut (2 fisherman).

Forester's Lodge (1 Forester, cut only).
Scrapyard (1 Scrap Collector).

Upgrade to Mounted Bus for extra storage and a confidence bonus.

Gather's Cabin (1 Gatherer).
Hunting Lodge (1 Hunter).

2x Recyclers (2 refiners). Metal to begin with.
Graveyard (1 Mortician).
Workshop (2 Technicians). Make scrap tools (100% work efficiency bonus for workers), once built assign Recyclers to cloth for building materials.

Assign another settler as a water carrier and one more gatherer.

School (teacher) for 50% work efficiency bonus for educated workers.
Herbal hut (1 healer)
Charcoal Burner (2 Charcoal Burner) use for Activated Carbon Masks and water filtration.

Tailors Shop ( 1 Tailors). Make activated carbon masks.
2x Recycler (2 refiner). Plastic to upgrade cistern.
upgrade cistern to water tower. You could choose to build a second cistern instead of a water tower but the water tower allows you to filter contamination.

Shelter
Hospital (1 medic)
add a 2nd Workshop to keep up with demand for tools. (build earlier if you can't keep up with demand).

Switch to producing Metal tools when you have a surplus of scrap tools.

At this point it was season 29 and I had 12 houses and I was still stockpiling Activated Carbon Masks.

Keep an eye on food, water and assign settlers where needed. Add housing very slowly and see if you can keep up with demands.

Aim to have,

3 Farms
2 Gather's Cabins
2 Fishing Huts
6 recyclers

You have the choice of building either the expedition or Research station. Researching and building the refinery is expensive but it is much more efficient. The expedition station allows you to find seeds, tools and other resources. I would build the expedition station first.

Expedition Station. (this allows you to find resources) expedition rations allow for more actions at ruins.

Research station. (5 researchers because without power it takes a long time to research anything) Research Refinery.

Please help other survivors in the comments section. :)
What leads to mass death.
The biggest thing is building too many houses which leads to a massive population boom. You can't keep up with the demand for food, water and you can't supply everyone with tools. With no tools settlers work very slowly, all this means not producing enough food, water etc.

Add houses very slowly after the first ten, making sure you can keep up with the demand of water, food, tools and herbs.

You don't need to house everyone, build shelters later on.

I find people that have the inclination of helping people either never do or never can but atleast the gesture is there. I could go on to make a lot of criticisms but I just don't have the interest for it.

So I just wanted to add that it may be a good idea to integrate shelters as a strategy of population control by using them to control basic pop but keeping a count of houses dropped so you know if theres a potential to over populate. So if you know you can only support a pop of 100, if houses house 2 kids than dont place more than 50 or so homes.

It's kinda dark but planned homelessness helps to. surprisingly homeless doesnt have as much of a negative effect that you'd think it would and its a great way to maintain a desired pop if things get too cluttered and chaotic to start laying shelters everywhere.

@Clariti

When they have arrived there should be an icon that looks like a walkie-talkie at the top of the screen, click on it and it should take you to them. Have you tried clinking on the Expedition Station. It has been a while since I have played.

@Vjorkal Basically the guide is out of date.

I updated the guide for a new civilisation update which was released on 27/08/2020 but the livestock update which I think introduced pastures was released on the 30/11/2020.

I noticed you didn't make any mention of the Herder for food production. Any reason why? Trying to understand the whole food production better on the long term.
