The Stadt Köln (city of Cologne) was built in 1938 as a council ship for the city of Cologne and was intended to serve the city's guests at the International Transport Exhibition planned for 1940. The ship was named the Hansestadt Köln (Hanseatic City of Cologne) on June 18, 1938
