Description
South Dakota Senator George McGovern was the first Democratic candidate to be chosen by the new primary system instituted after the chaos of the '68 convention. George McGovern would face incumbent Richard Nixon in 1972 and go down in one of the largest defeats in history. Seen as the radical candidate of "Acid, Amnesty, and Abortion", few could stomach voting for him.
