How to Identify an Artifact
So you went through all that trouble to get yourself a piece of amazing alien technology, but now, what do you *do* with that Firaxughinian Artifact?

Well, artifacts grant you powers that are always on, so you don't actually have to *do* anything with them. However, you usually won't know what power they are giving you. But there are benefits to identifying them, which means to declare their power; to say "I know what this does!".

First, find the artifact in the artifact menu:

Click on it, and it will take you to this screen:

Identification is a two-step process. First, you have to decide whether this artifact is helping you or hurting you (positive or negative effect).

If you choose wrong, there will be consequences. Artifacts know what you're doing, and if you're not in tune with them, they don't like it. Maybe your shields will go down. Or a wave of negative energy could damage your hull or hurt your crew.

So during the first phase, you can chicken out. Just hit "escape" and there's no pressure.

But if you choose correctly, you go to the next screen, where you must actually choose which power you think the artifact has. You have quite a few options right here, and only one is correct.

But it's not all just guess-work. Sometimes you can tell what strange new powers you have, just by paying attention. And if you get it wrong, and if the artifact isn't destroyed in the process, remember, and don't pick the same thing twice!

Have fun! Building a collection of helpful artifacts is one of the most rewarding challenges of the game.

Well, roguelikes are all about learning the system - so new players pretty much don't have to worry about the intricacies of ID'ing Artifacts. I didn't even find one for the first several hours.

I don't think this system is totally based in guessing at all; it's about careful observation of what is going on around you.

This sounds very interesting, but maybe not enjoyable. You, as the developer would know about the plasma lance effect. But a new play has no idea what that even means or does. So, we would just be guessing 100%. The game looks great, but having to guess so much for crafting and artifacts just seems weird to me. Maybe it works in-game, though, so I'll give it a try.

While I was writing this guide, I actually identified the artifact in question by paying attention.
I bumped into an alien spaceship by accident, and it performed an automatic melee-type attack, so I suddenly knew that i had the "plasma lance" effect.

They are always on, and sometimes you will KNOW for certain.

Spoiler:
The first 3-5 artifacts you find will always be positive!

@FroBodine: The artifact is already working as soon as you find it, even before it's identified. So you can pay attention and try to see what the effect is. Also, later on, you may find other ways to help identify what artifacts do...

So, is it just a complete guessing game to select positive or negative, and then the next level power selection? Or, is the item already working as soon as you find it and equip it. So, in effect you can play the game and see if you can figure out its effect?

Or, is it just blind guessing?
