Just a couple of starter tips for anyone new to the game. Once you've played the first chapters a few times you'll know enough to be able to deviate from this without struggling.

Starting Tips
  • This game's combat is designed around ranged attacks. Especially in the early games even melee-specced characters will not live long enough to get up close to do attacks. Make good use of your talents (v menu pauses combat) to throw weapons. Cinderblocks and thrown explosives are also effective ranged weapons. Expect to have to use a gun at times, even if you don't put any skill points into Pistols or Rifles.

  • Try to put points into Willpower whenever you can-every skill's highest active talents require high Meta to use. You won't be able to add them until you have the minimum Willpower.

  • Make an early priority of Charisma, in particluar getting the Detect Motive and Negotiation talents. They open up dialogue options and will pay for themselves in terms of point spent.

  • Try not to jump everywhere. It consumers Meta, and the collision detection can glitch leaving you stuck inside a floor or wall with no choice but to reload.

  • Save often. Running back to a bed after every kill may be cumbersome, but it's better than having to repeat a long combat sequence you barely survived the first time around.

Since this is an easy to find thread for lost souls, here are some things I wanted to know starting out:

Start off with a pistol. Rifle ammo is expensive and less common to start. Melee largely seems to be like hard mode.
Leveling pistols/rifles to 25 is enough.
You want to level Software
The low level Survival skills aren't necessary on the normal difficulty IMO. There's a lot of free stuff to find.
Maxing Stealth/Master of Shadows while fun mid-game was not worth it. Many later enemies can see you anyway and NPCs will still see you doing naughty things.
Not sure all the ways this game can go, but I unnecessarily wiped out an entire faction very prematurely (without fully utilizing their trainers/quests) and might've made the game harder than necessary. If I play again I will harder to avoid making factions hostile.

You can save anywhere with F3 (as long as there are not enemies close). No need to run all the way back to bed.

Hi, do you have an example starting build for some of us? I'm a big fan of making my own character builds through deviating from a guide.
