Legends speak of a great beast, the Nian, that dwells in the mountains. Once every spring, it is said that the Nian would emerge from his hiding place to terrorize nearby villages.

One day, the villagers devised a plan to protect themselves from the beast. Using loud noises, bright lights and vivid red robes they were able to confuse and startle Nian, driving him back to the mountains from whence he came.

Every new year since, people continue this tradition lest the Nian return to terrorise them once more.

However, you shouldn't believe everything you read. The beast is not so bad once you get to know him.
