Today I present to you the SpaceX Cargo Dragon and Falcon 9 with 100% automated landing capabilities!

HOW TO USE:

When launching I highly recommend spawning the rocket in the middle of a lake as it gives plenty of room for the booster to land itself properly.

1 - Press the button at the bottom of the rocket around the engines.
2 - Let it fly! (its 100% automated). I would recommend flying alongside it or being inside the Cargo Dragon so that you can control it once you reach space.
3 - Once you reach space select the Dragon remote and do things in space.
4 - When returning to the planet detach the merge blocks. Make sure you are within the planet's gravity.
5 - Deploy parachute and land it like a proper engineer!

As the title suggests this is the Cargo Dragon Spacecraft which was launched by SpaceX on top of their Falcon 9 rocket. The Cargo Dragon is an uncrewed vehicle and was primary used to deliver cargo supplies to the ISS. The Dragon had a 'Trunk' section which enabled it to carry cargo such as docking adaptors which would not have fit inside the capsule itself. The Dragon also had extending solar panels and radiators to provide power. Unlike other Cargo Spacecraft the Dragon could renter the atmosphere and be recovered. This meant it could take supplies down and be refurbished so that it could go back to the space station again.

The first production ready Cargo Dragon to launch was on the 8th December 2010 on top of the first version of the Falcon 9 (v1.0) (and no I am not building it!) It completed its mission and was recovered. This meant that the SpaceX Cargo Dragon and Space Shuttle both briefly flew at the same time.

During its operational lifespan only one Cargo Dragon was lost when the Falcon 9 exploded on 28th June 2015. It would have survived if the parachutes had opened but it was not programmed to do so. After the incident this feature was added in.

The Cargo Dragon has also tested heat shield components for the SpaceX Starship project during when re-entrying the atmosphere.

The Cargo Dragon continued to fly to the ISS until its was last launched on March 7th 2020. It has now been recovered and retired. Its replacement (Dragon 2/Crew Dragon) will now deliver cargo to the ISS as well as crewed missions.

Farewell Cargo Dragon, you have served us well and will never be forgotten!

Many thanks go to OctoMoose for allowing me to use his International Space Station in this workshop item.

Enjoy!
