Gear improvement: modding

Modding allows us to add bonuses to our equipment. It is the most advanced, and most costly, method for adding bonuses. Perform this only on end game gear or important armor pieces for level 50-75. This process can be used on both armor and weapons alike.

If necessary, we should levelup our weapon and then downgrade it -- before modding -- doing so afterwards would erase the modding bonuses. Double-gold and onyx slots on the other hand, should be done afterwards.

level up weapon > downgrade > mod > double-gold and create onyx slots

Step 1: Increase item quality
If we are starting from a regular piece of armor or weapon (its name is written in white), we will need to upgrade its quality first. This method changes the quality of the item from normal to uncommon, uncommon to rare and rare to legendary. Doing so is necessary in unlocking the ability to mod. These upgrade scrolls are tradable and available in the cash shop, under the section "Mod and Upgrade"

Quality materials
Beginner armor upgrade scroll (Green)
For armor between level 10 and 25, changes quality from normal to uncommon

Beginner armor upgrade scroll (Blue)
For armor between level 10 and 25, changes quality from uncommon to rare

Beginner armor upgrade scroll (Orange)

Medium armor upgrade scroll (Green)
For armor between level 26 and 45, changes quality from normal to uncommon

Medium armor upgrade scroll (Blue)
For armor between level 26 and 45, changes quality from uncommon to rare

Medium armor upgrade scroll (Orange)
For armor between level 26 and 45, changes quality from rare to legendary

Advanced armor upgrade scroll (Green)
For armor between level 46 and 70, changes quality from normal to uncommon

Advanced armor upgrade scroll (Blue)
For armor between level 46 and 70, changes quality from uncommon to rare

Advanced armor upgrade scroll (Orange)

Scrolls for weapons work the same way
However their level range is different than that of armor

Insurance scroll (Upgrade) -- sold by Guild Merchant III (and cash shop)
If upgrade failed, weapon and armor will not be destroyed

Changing quality
After purchasing the appropriate scrolls, simply double-click it, add the armor or weapon, plus the insurance scroll, then confirm. Repeat until desired quality is reached. Note that legendary modding materials are more difficult to get and some are cash shop exclusives -- stopping at rare quality is very common amongst players.

Step 2: Identify mod level
If we've just updated the quality of our gear, the mod level may not be visible since we haven't added anything (yet). Once we've done so, an upgrade information will appear in the item's description. With the example below, we can see a mod of level 1 for max health and magical attack. The bonus % increases with each mod, whereas 1/20 is 1%, 2/20 is 2% and so on, up to 20%. Do note that the bonus we get is random. However, it is possible to refresh the bonus and try again.

Step 3: Modding
This process requires the combination of...
  • Equipment mod scroll
  • Insurance scroll (Mod)
  • And many materials
The materials differ depending on the type of weapon or armor we are modding, but it mostly includes monster drops, crafting materials, another armor or gemstones (citrine A, etc). Equipment scrolls are tradable and available in the cash shop under the section "Mod and Upgrade"

Note that Insurance Scrolls are optional, but given the value of our armor and weapons, it's highly recommended to use it -- because if the mod fails without a scroll, our weapon and armor will be destroyed, completely. It can be purchased from Guild Merchant III or the cash shop. It is also worth nothing that the higher the mod level, the smaller the success rate becomes -- hence the suggestion to use better insurance scrolls as the mod level increases.

Modding materials
Equipment mod scroll (Green)
Used to level up uncommon bonus

Equipment mod scroll (Blue)
Used to level up rare bonus

Equipment mod scroll (Orange)
Used to level up legendary bonus

Insurance scroll (Mod) I -- sold by Guild Merchant III
Benefit: weapon and armor will not be destroyed
If mod failed: -1 mod level

Insurance scroll (Mod) II
Benefit: +25% success and weapon and armor will not be destroyed
If mod failed: -1 mod level

Insurance scroll (Mod) III
Benefit: weapon and armor will not be destroyed
If mod failed: mod level remains the same

Insurance scroll (Mod) IV
Benefit: +25% success and weapon and armor will not be destroyed
If mod failed: mod level remains the same

Modding
Once we have everything, modding is quite simple. Double-click the equipment scroll and select the armor or weapon. Add insurance scroll, then materials. Do a little dance irl for extra luck and click Confirm.

Modding bonuses
The bonus stats obtained through modding are random and the same stat cannot be added twice on the same piece of gear. Below is a list of possibilities. The icons represent which type of equipment could gain said bonus.

LEGEND
Hat Body Pants Shoes Wrist guards Shield Weapon

Possible bonuses
Increase max mana or max health
Increase mana recovery or health recovery
Increase elemental defense
Increase physical or magical defense
Increase evasion
Reduce damage taken
Increase physical or magical attack
Increase accuracy

Changing the mod bonus
There are items available to help us change the mod bonus if we don't like what we got. They are non-tradable and bought from the cash shop only. With that said, if our armor or weapon has only 1 mod bonus so far, it can be cheaper to trash it and try again on a new piece. Otherwise, purchase a Refresh Stone and wipe off all bonuses!

Keep uncommon
Use a Normal Lock Stone to preserve the uncommon bonus. Then use refresh stone to wipe rare and legendary bonuses.

Keep rare
Use a Normal Lock Stone + a Rare Lock Stone to preserve both uncommon and rare bonuses. Then use refresh stone to wipe legendary bonus.

Speculations
A normal lock stone can only be used on the uncommon bonus and a rare lock stone with the rare bonus. Therefore, we should ensure that we like the bonus before moving on to the next one.
