Bertrand Zobrist was a brilliant scientist and madman obsessed with Dante’s Inferno.
The plague that Zobrist created is revealed to be a vector virus that randomly activates to employ DNA modification to cause sterility in 1/3 of humans, thereby reducing population growth to a more stable level.
The plague mutates to disturb 2/3 of humans, thereby mentally destroying population.
The plague withdraws power from all 9 circles of Dante's Hell, to burn the souls and incinerates the hearts of all infected humans and eventually killing their bodies and draining their souls to hell.
