Battles Between Gods

Big Final Update Has Dropped! There's Some Important Changes:
  • (Technically happened in the last update, but) I removed the music from the levels, so now it's just grassland ambience, yippeee. They still don't have footstep sounds though, because it still broke the other sounds. (The song was "Clubbed to Death" from the Matrix movie if you want to pull it up on YouTube and put it on loop ;)
  • First, the Slow Motion effects have been made toggleable! Toggle it on or off with ' (Apostrophe) . This is saved to your config file, so toggling it will be remembered between arenas and game sessions.
  • Second, the characters have been made spawnable. Using F1 to edit, going to Load Item, and finding the custom Battles Between Gods section will allow you to spawn in Light and Dark versions of the God and Mortal characters. The Dark versions are teamed up with "villain" and the Light ones are teamed up with "turner". They act exactly like they do on the mod's arena, so keep that in mind.
  • Since I made these guys spawnable, I've removed the slowmo code from the AI, and made sure only the player can activate it. This means that you can have battle royals with these guys and there won't be any slow motion to ruin it.
  • Smaller but important, the level will now auto reset whenever your opponent falls through the ground as well, meaning no more manual restarts to fix it!

Want to fight like or against a God? You've found the right mod. Battle against a God with equal power, or test your endurance as a Mortal against the unstoppable force of one.

I never mentioned it previously, but this mod was heavily inspired by the Beat Naruto Challenge Mod. If you haven't checked it out before and you enjoy my mod, then you'll likely enjoy the Naruto one. The mod was an attempt at creating an overwhelmingly powerful character and hoping you had the skills necessary to overcome them. I really enjoyed it, however I always felt like either the fight was over too soon, or I wished it could've gone on forever. So, I came up with the Battles Between Gods.

This mod is a level pack that adds 8 identical levels to the game under the campaign title, "Battles Between Gods."

The Levels are identical, with the difference being who and what you're playing against. The FIRST listed character is who you play as in the following levels:
  • God vs God
  • God vs Mortal (play as god)
  • Mortal vs God (play as mortal)
  • Mortal vs Mortal
  • 2P God vs God
  • 2P God vs Mortal (player 1 plays god)
  • 2P Mortal vs God (player 1 plays mortal)
  • 2P Mortal vs Mortal

Both the AI and the player are immortal. There is no winning, there is no losing. There is just kicking butt from one end of the level to the other and having fun doing it. If that isn't your cup of tea, then I'm sorry but there are other mods out there for you.

In creating these characters, they now move super fast and don't need a huge windup to pick up speed. So, now what? Well, add slowmotion of course! Taking inspiration from the existing Slow-Mo Block/Dodge mod, I made it so that whenever you land a hit, block a hit, dodge a hit, get thrown, or even ragdoll from an in-control pose, time will temporarily slow (maybe a little less than a second) to emphasis the "coolness." This effect is built into the characters, and only applies to the Player, not the AI. It's toggleable on or off using the ' (Apostrophe) key, which will be remembered between sessions.

Because of how fast the characters move, their footstep sounds actually overflow the audio buffer to the point of shutting down other sound sources (or something like that, I'm not a sound guy). So, to combat this, characters do not play footsteps. We lose footsteps, but gain ambience, so I'm cool with that.


Known Bugs

Look, I came back to clean up and polish the mod up a bit, and I have done so. There's only so much I can do to the mod, and I think I've rounded out its corners enough. There's a point where you have to call something done, and I'm doing that here. If you know what you're doing and you want to take a crack at fixing these bugs yourself, be my guest, but if you do make fixes that work, I think many others would appreciate it being created as an addon to this mod. Provided the fixes work and I can verify them, I'll either link to the fixes mod in this page or I'll merge it and mark you a contributor, up to you, just send a comment and let me know.

  • God characters move at a speed and in a way which may cause them to run themselves through the ground at certain angles. The levels included in the mod are made to reset in the case that this happens (and I've included the hotspot that contains this functionality in the Load Item menu with the characters). This is something to do with the physics and collision system, and there's unfortunately nothing I can or want to do about it.
  • God characters hit hard enough to potentially launch their opponents through the ground. Same issue as above, but connected to attacks instead of just average movement.

@woahepic, the 2 player maps work with the built-in multiplayer. By having a controller plugged in, joining the 2-player maps will make your keyboard player 1, and your controller player 2. If you enable Split-Screen in the settings menu, then the screen will be split, however only the sounds as heard from player 1 are heard. If you don't enable split-screen in the settings, then the camera performs more like Mortal Kombat and tries to keep both players on the screen at once.

Everyone who still watches this mod, it's been updated. This is the last update for this mod that'll come from me, I believe I've fixed everyone's gripes with it and come up with middle-grounds that everyone can be happy with. I hope you all continue to enjoy the mod for many years to come. If not, oh well, I tried.

@maegull the last paragraph before the Known Bugs section explains how to remove the music and add back footsteps. Just enter the XML file for the map and remove the line that defines the sound hotspot
