Traditional Polynesian Catamaran

No zoo is completely without a traditional catamaran, the wayfinder technology of the Austronesian peoples! Between about 3000 and 1000 BC seafaring Pacific islanders spread through the oceans of Southeast Asia into the edges of western Micronesia and on into Melanesia. Using natural navigation aids such as the stars, ocean currents, and wind patterns, the Polynesians encountered nearly every island within the vast Polynesian Triangle in their outrigger canoes, double-hulled canoes, and catamarans.
