Labskaus

".. I've never heard about Labskaus. This was my first time, when I was browsing the UBOAT mods, so I had to try it. Just finished my first plate of Labskaus and it was out of this world.."

Labskaus is a culinary specialty from Northern Germany and in particular from the cities of Bremen, Hamburg, and Lübeck.

It is a dish the sailors cooked on the fishing ships when they were out in the sea for weeks and months. Because there were no fridges or cooling systems on these ships, they had to use long-lasting ingredients such as pickles, red beet, eggs, potatoes, onions and beef that was cured in brine and is called corned beef. Some recipes put beetroot, pickled gherkin, or even herring into it, while others have these ingredients as side orders.

The dish became common amongst sailors and seamen during the time of the great ships. Potatoes and salted meats were a standard fare and Labskaus would make a less than fresh cut of meat more palatable and stretch the meat supply.

I just looked up "Lapskaus", and found the brown coloured one from Norway, however after that I searched up "German Lapskaus" and found out this is really what German Lapskraus is like, it is in fact red.

I'd never thought I'd see a discussion about lapskaus on Steam. @Rob_Otter: I'm guessing Profile Name is Scandinavian. We eat our lapskaus slightly differently from Germans, it would seem. I've never seen it with an egg or the red color either. I'm used to it looking like this [duckduckgo.com].

where is the fish and cooked meat and a cooked egg??
Rob_Otter 30 Dec, 2020 @ 2:06am
The main ingredients are salted meat or corned beef, potatoes, beetroot, pickled gherkin, or even herring. Others have maybe these ingredients (pickles, onions, etc) as side orders.

Labskaus used to be a poor persons and sailors food, but now pickled meats and fish are so expensive that it has become a luxury food, even served at fancy restaurants. It also has a reputation for being a hangover cure.

It’s bright red colour from the beet juice is typically for this meal. "Proifle Name" just shows how less he knows about Labskaus.

That is the weirdest Lapskaus I've ever seen..

Maybe the Germans just use uncooked meat dough, looks like it at least and a barely cooked egg, with an ungodly amount of meat or sauce, red sauce for some reason, oh god almighty in heaven.

I can only say one thing, if that is a German attempt at Lapskaus, Germans don't even know how to Lapskaus and really Lapskaus is just leftovers, but like, edible ones, like potatoes, some sauce maybe, maybe not, or meatballs etc, not the blood soaked brain matter of your enemies!

No, that was only once or thrice back in Viking times..

God help you all, Lapskaus with a barely cooked egg on it, or is it fried, because either way It's heresy, but at least the egg might still be edible if it was fried, just wash off some of the brain matter and blood and at least that is something for breakfast, guess that's why they're all going right for the egg too, got to get to it quick, scoop it out.

I'm sorry, but you left me no choice, that's non descript uncooked meat with an egg on top and you won't convince me otherwise, nor would any German, although I doubt they would try.

You know nothing of Lapskaus, nothing!

Looks good!
Labskaus has actually been a popular dish for seafarers, as they often suffered from scurvy and had difficulty chewing.
When properly prepared, it provides many vitamins and other substances that the body needs.
However, there was less on board than in port.
Still, I like the way you portrayed it.
My thanks for that!
Excuse my bad English! Translated with Google.
