More Stone Types

Tired of "stone" being the same, everywhere you go on the planet? Try More Stone Types. *Now with Stone Crusher!

Summary
I've added eight broad categories of real stone types to the Earthlike planet, with different resource values based on their real world chemistry. Rock that has an abundance of a single resource type will have 4x the amount of vanilla stone, while rocks that are split between two different types will each have double. Oh, and you can also get magnesium from normal stone now.

To balance those advantages, processing dirt will only give you half of the normal amounts of resources, and stone will have 1/4 of the normal amounts of resources that are not abundant in that specific type of stone.

The new stone types are well distributed throughout the world, and every location has every stone type, but you may need to dig quite far to reach them, since the thickness of any given layer of stone varies as well.

The new stone types are:
Sandstone (+Si)
Limestone (Si/Mg)
Shale (Si/Fe)
Dolomite (+Mg)
Chert (Si/Ni)
Laterite (Ni/Fe)
Bauxite (+Fe)
Basalt (Fe/Mg/Ice)

I tried to keep the visuals as close to the real stone as I could.

Stone Generation
Every location on the Earthlike planet is assigned a specific stone profile, based on it's latitude, as well as the angle of the ground generated there. Because of the mix, it's very likely that you will dig through several "zones" as you are digging a hole.

Each zone has all of the stone types assigned to it, but they are in random orders, and they have varying thicknesses. The thickness of any given layer is between 1m and 160m; heavily weighted towards the lower end of the scale. Look at the graph in the screenshots, if you're curious about the odds of any given layer thickness.

Beneath all the other layers, is a thick slab of basalt (what most of our tectonic plates are made out of in real life). Think of it as the bedrock layer. It's not any harder to dig through, but it does give lower yields than other stone types for it's primary materials of Iron and Magnesium. That's because it has three primary materials! If you are in desperate need of ice, just dig through all the other layers of stone, then process the basalt. Also found beneath deserts and ice lakes, if you want some that's closer to the surface.

At the very bottom, it's normal stone again, since I've run into the limits for where the game will allow you to place custom material types. You shouldn't ever need to dig that deep though, so it probably won't come up.

Gravel Processor
The gravel processor functions like an assembly machine (in the code it is technically a survival kit, since it does not allow disassembly or repeat mode.) It takes gravel in batches of 1200 (modified by your crafting efficiency), and outputs whatever resource you select from among the resources found on the Earthlike planet. In general, it produces amounts that are relative to the yield of the natural existing ore, with a 5x boost to those ores that you can already acquire from stone. Don't expect to run an entire industry off the output (especially since the crafting time for a single batch is 100 seconds), but it can make that early seach for cobalt much more bearable.

A word of warning: the Gravel Processor is very power hungry, so keep your power levels in mind when you are producing several batches of resources in a row.

Stone Crusher ***NEW***
The stone crusher makes processing stone twice as fast. If you feed the raw stone into the crusher, it will produce crushed stone, which can then be refined into ingots like normal. The total time to crush and then refine is still faster than the normal refining, and the crusher uses very little power. Great for when you need to process a lot of stone.

Alternatively, stick some productivity modules on the crusher to get better yield out of the stone that you are processing.

Final notes
If you're curious, the first two screenshots were taken of the world with no dirt on it, so that's what the surface of the stone is distributed like.

Unfortunately, not compatible with "Better Stone" mod at this time, since both mods need to modify the same file.

Comes in a version with no machines, if you want only the world generation: "No Blocks" version
Also comes with a Deep Ores version: "Deep" version

Potential future improvements, if this mod proves popular:
-other planets
-specialized stone processing equipment

also what are the chances for this to become available to other planets? maybe with a compatibility to
Star System Generator ?

is this combatible to "configurable Ores"

If not would you please add a version, with "fewer" but "bigger" and "deeper" ore fields.

I would also like to add my vote possibly making this work with Better Stone. The idea of a more realistic variation of stone minerals, mixed with a more realistic variation of ore vein types - that would be great. I realize that this isn't necessarily easy, of course, as I have almost no relevant skills useful for modding.

Also, this mod needs a patch to work with Industrial Overhaul so you can use the stone types in survival kit and other things that Industrial Overhaul adds or changes. Also, would be nice if each of the stone types had a name other then "Stone" to be more immersive/realistic.

Is there an icon mod for this that replaces the icons with different textures to match whatever icon mod you use, because I would like to have icons that match the colored icons mod.

@baph.online shouldn't be an issue?
Haven't been keeping up to date with Space Engineers though.
baph.online 9 sep, 2021 @ 12:54
hey, is this compatible with concrete voxels? cheers

Thanks for the quick answer! I found out the crushed stones will only go into your heavy refinery(only one i didnt have in base) , industrial refinery doesnt accept them, at least on my server it isnt, didnt try singleplayer yet.

@Luckaryu I have not updated it for industrial overhaul, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are some issues.

Is there a version of this that works with Better Stone? If not could you make a version that works with Better Stone? Also, does this work on existing saves or do I have to start over?
