Description
This is the first mod I wrote for tpf2 - now there is something better.

This is a utility mod. it lets you drop a map overlay on top of the map editor surface.

Updated 9th April 2020 - incorporating a change suggested by Archimon - which neatly removes the flicker from the maps.

You can then trace the roads / rail lines etc. and drop towns in the right place.

It is far from perfect - I would really like to use terrrain faces and get the map to fold over the terrain.
At the moment it 'hovers' just above the ground. Which is great if your map is completely flat but not so great if you are using a height map.

The mod can be found in the madhatter category in the asset menu.

Options

Base map size - set this to match the map editor size - ie small / medium / large / etc
Base map ratio - set this to match the map editor ratio - ie 1:1 1:2 1:3 etc.
These two values will initially scale the map to fit the map editor surface size.
- so you can use the same map on any setting


Map - 1,2,3 or 4 - You can have up to 4 graphic files with maps in.
They are usually located here:-
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\1066780\1939067713\res\textures
Each one is 2048x2048 replace the contents with your maps but keep the file size.

Scale Major % - 0,10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90
Scale Minor % - 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

These two are added together - 90 + 9 = 99%, 0+1 = 1% they adjust the map size

The map flicker seems to be back, and the mouse cursor also seems to disappear.

hmmm - okay the results are better - eventually - because it wraps the map to the surface.
This ones better if you want 'simple'. There was/is another one in progress (not by me) that will be amazing if it ever gets published that will take a map and literally place everything - heightmap, roads, rail, trees, buildings - its an insane idea.

how would the other mod be better? It's super complicated. Also, does the map file need to be a tga file before going into textures folder?

the texture files need to be named
madhatter_map1.tga madhatter_map2.tga madhatter_map3.tga madhatter_map4.tga

exactly like that all lower case.

I must be doing something wrong. Adjusted the images to 2048 by 2048 pixels and saved as .tga file. Replaced the files in the right directory but yet when I want to use the overlay in TF2, I only get a purple image? What am I doing wrong?

Hi Brelbc - to be honest I don't remember I originally published this in 2019. I suspect not. I think you would need a lot more than 4 graphic files to cover a megalomaniac map .

Great mod. Is it also possible to use it on hegalomaniac maps or is it limited to Very Large Size?

would it be possible that the overlay can render transparent ?
just making the .tga having transparency doesn't render ingame.
