WEREWOLF STEEL

Description
Your village is being beset by werewolves, so you need to create a metal for weapons. Fire and silver are known to harm werewolves, but iron is also necessary for a strong, durable metal. Unfortunately, all you've got is some dirty lead and some hot quicksilver.

I certainly hope someone can beat the original--if nothing else, there's got to be a faster way than 965 cycles!

Haha cool Cornbozo!

Ok so this post is really old but i solved the puzzle once, then thought: "you know what? this could be literally twice as fast"
so i made it twice as fast!

i've picked up this game fairly recently, but this was quite a learning experience as i've never made something like those 4 rail arms function before.
thanks 2019 stupid snake

The 73. quicksilver gets grabbed on cycle 145, debonded on 146, moved to the glyph of projection on 147, dropped on 148. That same cycle the now complete final product gets moved to the output, to be dropped on 149. A lower cyclecount would require not using that quicksilver. To use just 72 quicksilver and 72 lead the last lead neads to be purified than projected and bonded twice. yrdns demonstrated the best result such a machine could achieve.

Are you sure about that theoretical minumum? I feel you could shave away a few cycles by orienting things differently

And here's a 149: https://i.imgur.com/mCxkoNr.gifv

The actual theoretical minimum this time. I hand the first five products over to the mecahinsm on the left, to make space for the next product. There they slowly get completed. This is possible, because only the last product matters for the cycle count.

Here's a 150: https://i.imgur.com/BxpJHLm.gifv
Another cycle can be saved by projecting last, instead of bonding.

I love yrdns' fast solution. Those werewolves will never know what hit 'em.

Congrats, that is a very fast and elegant solution, but it's not optimal. Purification is efficient, but slow, so it's actually faster to create the final iron of the sixth product by projecting the last lead twice. (So using 73 qs, 71 lead insted of 72 each) This saves another 3 cycles with both inputs being limiting. I was working on a solution, that achieves that, but didn't finish it (yet).
yrdns 10 Sep, 2019 @ 3:24pm
Got it down to 152 cycles using purification (and a LOT of track arms). Should be optimal, inputs are saturated and last iron makes it way to goal sans dead cycles

Damn, you guys are awesome. I was sure it could get faster than what I had, but I was assuming around 500 or 600 cycles minimum. Those last two are masterpieces.
