Hidden Rules of Cooldown Length
Not So Hidden Facts

Very Simple. If you get a cooldown in less than 7 days of your last coooldowns end point it will pile on to a certain point and reset your 7 days of judgement.

Order of cooldowns is as follows:

1st cooldown received in 7 days:
30 mins

2nd cooldown before 7 days elapsed
2 hours

3rd cooldown before 7 days elapsed
1 day

4th cooldown before 7 days elapsed
7 days!


Seems straightforward right? But there's a few things Valve doesn't tell you.



The Background Rules

After you get a 7 day you must be on your best behavior for the next *14* days. After your ban is lifted if you get kicked, or call a kick or get kicked for suicides or team damage you'd be given another 7 day. (The limits to all of these actions are laid out further along this guide)

The 1 Month

A lot of people get a 7 day ban over and over. And over and over. And over and over. And over and over. But they seem to follow the rules, they make sure not to troll for 1 week after the 7 day ban is lifted, so that means they're on a whole new week of judgement right?

WRONG!!!! If you get 2 consecutive 7 day bans Valve has a special place in Cooldown Hell™ for you. You are now on a 3 WEEK probation after the ban is over. for a total of 4 weeks of suffering. Granted you can play comp all you want for the next 3 weeks but if you make the slightest infraction in that 3 week period you get another 7 day with the 3 week 'probation'. Essentially you'll be in 1 month limbo forever because in silver people love to kick all the time for fun. If you're stuck in this loop you'd be better off uninstalling for a full month and coming back CLEAN!

Below this will be information regarding what it takes to get a ban in the first place.
Causes of Bans
Calling Votekicks

A lot of people don't know that you can get a cooldown for calling too many votekicks in a week.
I'm not certain of the number but its something like 5 per week/3 per match. Now none of this actually affects you if a player on your team doesn't get kicked, but if they do then you'd better hope you're under your limit. Another unfortunate thing is that the number of votekicks carries over from game to gave over the 7 day period.

EXAMPLE:

I had been calling votekicks all week long just to joke around knowing that no one would vote yes. (you know, the clutch or kick moments.) And I knew I was past my limit and I'd get a cooldown if anyone was kicked so I calmed down. Unfortunately next match a kid said "I need to leave for my mother's funeral [not a troll btw] please kick me". So someone called a votekick on him and I accidentally voted yes letting the vote pass. Right after the game ended I got a cooldown because I was past my limit of votekicks. Even though I didnt call the votekick the game remembered I was past the limit and all I needed was for a teammate to be kicked from a comp match anytime in the week for me to get hit with a cooldown. So just keep that little nuance in mind when you're throwing. Moral of the story? Let others call votekicks if someone actually needs to go.




Team Damage

In a comp match after the first 20 seconds of a round have expired team damage works differently as opposed to the first 20 seconds of a round. First lets talk about in the start of a round.

Part 1: Round Start

In the Start of a round the game only gives you ONE slip up. You may attack your teammates in the start of the round however you like one time, but if you do it again at round you'll be banned. The game doesn't differentiate between a Zeus shot, a grenade that attacks all 5 on the team, an AWP headshot, a quick burst from an automatic weapon (under 1 second of attacking however), a tap from a Glock, or even hitting a teammate with a DECOY! (actually quite absurd...) However if you do damage at round start repeatedly & for over 2 seconds you don't get a second chance, its just an instant ban.

Part 2: Mid Round

Mid round is VERY different. Since Valve assumes that by now you've engaged in a firefight you're given much leniency. You can kill up to 3 teammates OR attack teammates in the previous criteria mentioned up to 10 times. so say you throw 11 decoys at teammates in 11 different rounds. That'll get you a ban. AWP'ing/Zeus'ing 4 teammates also has the same effect. Be careful to make sure you don't exceed your attack limit and/or teamkill limit in a match.




Suicide

This is very easy to wrap your head around, if you kill yourself 5 times in 1 match its a ban. Also killing yourself as a BOT still counts. The game doesnt care if you burn yourself, 'nade yourself, break your legs, or fall off of Vertigo. It also doesn't care if you're at 1 healthpoint either. A suicide is a suicide to the game.

Also SOMETIMES (I don't know what causes this) you can get auto-kicked for suicides and you wont get the cooldown. Don't ask me why but thats how it is sometimes... Its happened to me twice now. I think it could be like if you're in good standing and haven't had a cooldown in a long time. MAYBE.




Kicked

If you're excessively kicked in a week (I think the limit is around 3-4 times per week) You'll get a cooldown. Nothing much to say about that. Make sure to play with a friend, that's all.




Abandon During Warmup

Valve takes comp seriously. If you abandon before the match starts you'll get a ban.




Overwatch Confirmed Greifing

If you get reported for greifing TOO often and someone in Overwatch decides you've been greifing you will in fact get a VAC ban, not a cooldown/temp ban. A proper VAC to keep you out of the game entirely.

this isnt relevant anymore cuz now if you zeus a teammate at round start you will always get an instant cooldown :'(
