T-55AM was developed in 1983 as a modernization of already obsolete T-55A.
This modernization supposed to take old T-55s on T-64A/72A level, by adding anti-HEAT armor packages on turret and frontal armor and increasing firepower with adding more effective ammunition and laser rangefinder.
Updated tanks also recieved ability to use 9K116-1 "Bastion" ATGMs, by shooting them from main gun (but they get almost no use in soviet army, since 2 rockets already cost more than whole T-55AM).
T-55AM-1 recieved more powerful engine (since tank became heavier on almost 6 tonnes).
Those tanks are still capable to show good results on battlefield.
