My order of doing things is: Flip battery on, then set flaps to 1 and flip APU on, lightly pull back on the stick to stop falling too quickly, spool up engine one, flip on HUD, stabilize the aircraft, go full throttle and spool up engine 2 and you should be gaining altitude now. Set flaps 0 and switch off APU and then RTB

Know your plane. Keeping level with no forward thrust is forcing your airspeed under the stall threshold. Pulling back under the same conditions is like beating your airspeed with a stick until it cowers in the corner. Airspeed = life.
