If you're having problems with the Lone Wolf achievement, instead of trying to complete a mission with a high level soldier late game, try doing it as early as possible with a Heavy.
After shooting down your first UFO take a single Heavy. You will be facing 4 Sectoids and a single Outsider. With a grenade you can oneshot a Sectoid and the rocket launcher will instantly kill the Outsider.
It is useful to remember that the Sectoids can boost their mates health via Mind Merge[xcom.wikia.com]. This, however, can be used as an advantage as killing the booster will also kill the one being boosted. This can lead to an easy double kill.
Knowing this, all you have to do is take it slow and the achievement is yours.

BTW. If your soldier is female, you will also get the Flight of the Valkyries achievement.

yeah, I always love when sectoids mind merge their buddies in XCOM because it means that I can get two or more kills for the price of one!

I did mine with a squad sight sniper about mid way through an impossible game, used the recon grenades out in front,double tap and pistol skills up.

I did the same thing Renfray. Late game with a fully leveled assult/psyhic soldier. Mind control baby!

In late game it´s just a matter of picking the right UFO to attack. As small as possible, with the least amount of troublesome aliens (no Sectopods, Mechtoids etc); then all you do is pick your best soldier (psionic and/or with genemods) and go play football with their butt-ugly alien skulls. Did it on Classic.

I got this using a high level sniper with mimic skin. Wrecked the Ethereal and his homies EZ. I found it to be much easier.

Me? I used Zhang. First UFO after I got him, shredder rocket promotion and bullet swarm, and I just played really really cautiously. Since I was only up against 3 sectoids and 3 floaters plus the Outsider even his shredder was a oneshot. Not a lot of fragments recovered but I got the achievement fine.

The trick works like a charm - in my case, finding a ruined building right in front of the downed UFO gave me four dead Sectoids in three turns, plus one of the Meld canisters. Caching the Outsider with his proverbial pants down afterwards was a foregone conclusion.
