Only just noticed your posts and thought I'd add that you can mitigate that particular section of the pyramid by having items or armour that prevent paralysis. Also, be sure to block the path behind you with Force Field while you deal with each spawner in turn. It's tough for sure, but certainly manageable.
Worst case scenario, unlock the console and cheat. There's no shame in it, you're there to have fun, right? spawn("bread") is all you need.
Most of the really good items are found in secrets, or areas controlled by the more powerful monsters. The zombies and rats don't actually respawn in Goldhaven either, and they aren't that difficult to take care of if you employ the right tactics.

It's one of the reasons Adrageron advises you to take a Farmer with you on your first playthrough. This allows you to cook pretty much anything from the get go from basic ingredients that you find lying around all over the place once you go outside.
