Description
I recently published several ships that consume a great quantity of hydrogen to fly, and I thought, "How would I refuel these ships from a planetary installation?" For a solution I present the Ice Hog.

Fully mobile, Ice Hog is a vanilla build that uses no pistons or rotors to do its mining. Rather, the 25 drills engage an ice lake by having the operator reduce the suspension strength of the 20 wheels in the design (using the cockpit controls). Doing so allows the drills to strip mine an approximately 65-meter wide by 2-meter thick slab of ice from the lake surface. The Ice Hog is operated at a forward speed of 1 km/hr and, although that speed is very slow, the quantity of ice harvested is very large. Access to the Ice Hog is accomplished by a ladder at the vehicle's rear; no jetpack is required.

Ice is stored in 20 large cargo containers, and processed in 84 O2/H2 generators, then stored in 75 hydrogen tanks. Off-loading occurs via any of the four top connectors. Status of the ice harvesting and hydrogen gas generation process is displayed on two LCD screens that are easily read from the cockpit. (Thanks to Mmaster for his wonderful Automatic LCDs 2 script!)

Stats: 1,829 blocks, 17,513 PCUs.

This build uses an industrial cockpit from the new DLC, but could easily be adapted to use a non-DLC cockpit if desired.

You can crank up the speed. Experiment with it to find the best balance of speed and ice retrieval. It's an old design that needs an overhaul. Feel free to change the design to fit your needs and improve on it. Make it your own.

Thanks for the tips. It worked. I dropped the Hog onto an empty spot on the ice lake. It LIVES! Damn, is it slow, but it definitely moves, turns (sort of) and gobbles ice like a monster. I think I might try to use AI to get it to do a pattern then return to drop off the ice when full.

Yeah, use {Alt}-{F10} to go to the Admin menu, click on the top checkbox to activate creative mode, exit from that, then look at "the hog" and do a cut, i.e., {Ctrl}-{X}. Just don't paste it back. (I hope I'm remembering the steps correctly.) Remember to disable creative mode when you're finished with the process.

Will try. Is there a simple way to delete the old swine from the world in creative so I dont have to grind it down? :steamhappy: <- Noobie

Tested on the Earthlike planet with a new start. Yeah, it works OK. Try going into the admin menu and giving yourself creative mode capabilities, then doing a cut-and-paste in a slightly different location. Spawn the Hog about half a wheel height above the ice lake, then paste it. The suspension can handle that short drop easily. Then turn off creative mode and try again.

Yikes. OK, that's weird. I don't know why that's happening. I spawned the critter into one of my pre-update saved creation games (new ship concept build) and it worked OK. I'll try a new start with the latest update.

I did. I just noticed that the wheels are also floating above surface of the ice. No attachment points anywhere I can find. Just floating, dude.

Try hitting "P" to release the parking break.

Thanks. I appreciate it. Stop by for Klang and a spider meat burrito.

Dunno. I haven't used that thing since Moby Dick was a minnow. It should work, but with Keen's latest update it wouldn't surprise me if everything it glitched. I'll check it out.
