Walkthrough Notes
Part 1: The First 11 Stages

The first part of the game involves linear platforming through 11 areas.
  • Some (not all) secret areas will be revealed in the walkthrough videos.
  • You may notice paths that seem inaccessible. You will be able to access these later in the game.
  • This section of the guide does not include the locations of Power Seals. A walkthrough for collecting all 45 Power Seals is included lower down in this guide. (Feel free to explore and collect them on your own, but keep in mind that not all of them can be collected at this point.)

Part 2: The 6 Music Notes

In the second part, the game becomes a metroidvania with a time-travel mechanic. You can revisit all of the areas you've already seen, and many new areas will be unlocked.
  • Your primary goal is to collect six music notes (a.k.a. "keys") that are scattered throughout the world. Some of these can't be collected until you've obtained certain items or completed certain tasks. This walkthrough lays out an optimal path for completing all of the required tasks with minimal backtracking.
  • A series of portals will open up in Tower of Time Headquarters to assist you with travelling around the world. (The ones that remain shut will open up when you find the other side of the portal in the game world.)
  • It's now possible to fast-travel back to Tower of Time HQ from any shop portal.
  • The Prophet in Tower of Time HQ will give you hints about what to do next. (You don't need to travel back to HQ for this; you can see your current hint on the map screen at any time.) For 300 Time Shards, the Shopkeeper will reveal exactly where you need to go to solve each hint.

Part 3: The Music Box

This is the final stage of the game, where you face off against the final boss. Pretty straightforward.

Part 4: Everything Else

Scroll to the bottom of this guide to find:
  • a walkthrough for collecting all Power Seals
  • all boss fights consolidated into a single video
  • guidance for a few achievements that you might not get during normal gameplay
  • a long list of helpful tips and tricks
Stage 1: Ninja Village

This area introduces the story and serves as a tutorial for the Cloudstep technique, which is this game's version of a double jump (see Tips & Tricks for more info). This move is very handy and is essential in some circumstances, so take some time to practice it before moving on.
Stage 2: Autumn Hills

Early on in this area, you will fall into a pit that contains a shop portal. Talk to the Shopkeeper to acquire the Climbing Claws, which allow you to climb walls (see Tips & Tricks for more info).

Boss fight vs. Leaf Monster is at 6:30 in the video.
Stage 3: Forlorn Temple/Catacombs

You start off at the entrance to the Forlorn Temple, but the bridge is broken and you will not be able to progress very far into this area (you will return here later). Fall into the pit beneath the missing bridge to enter the Catacombs.
  • Immediately upon entering the Catacombs, you will encounter a Phobekin, the first of four you must find and rescue in order to repair the bridge.
  • Watch out for skeletons lying on the floor. When you get close, they will awaken and walk around. If you're lined up with them horizontally, they run. (It's possible to take them out with a shuriken before they reanimate.)
Boss fight vs. Necromancer (Ruxxtin) is at 7:27 in the video.
Stage 4: Bamboo Creek

This area is full of challenges involving doors and moving platforms. Attack the wooden wheels to make things happen.
  • The large warrior with the halberd (2:17 in the video) cannot be killed. It's best to just avoid him and move on. (He eventually disappears if you attack him enough, but you don't get anything for your trouble.) Throw a shuriken to make him teleport out of your way and then jump and glide when he attacks you from behind. (This guy is later revealed to be the Demon General, Barma’thazel.)
There is no boss on this stage.
Stage 5: Howling Grotto

Once again, you will encounter a pit with a shop portal in it. Talk to the Shopkeeper to get the Wingsuit, which allows you to glide and ride air currents (see Tips & Tricks for more info).

Boss fight vs. Emerald Golem is at 7:29 in the video.
Stage 6: Quillshroom Marsh

Protip: The mushrooms are not powerups.
  • You can safely jump in and out of the quicksand here. In most cases it will kill you if you sink beneath it completely. (There is an exception.)
  • Red mushroom enemies have a spread attack that can be very hard to avoid. Time your approach carefully or take them out from a distance.
  • Blue mushroom enemies throw their caps and can attack you through walls. If you destroy the cap, the base of the mushroom will freak out and start to run back and forth. Attack low to destroy it.
Boss fight vs. Queen of Quills is at 6:54 in the video.
Stage 7: Searing Crags

Yet another pit with yet another shop portal. This time, the Shopkeeper gives you the Rope Dart (basically a grappling hook; see Tips & Tricks for more info).

Boss fight vs. Colus and Suses is at 6:05 in the video.
Stage 8: Glacial Peak

Ice physics (on floors) and unstable snow (on walls) make maneuvering tricky in some parts of this level. Expect a long, vertical climb with tons of enemies.
  • The large warrior with the halberd (4:33 in the video) cannot be killed.
There is no boss on the stage.
Stage 9: Tower of Time

Lots of puzzles involving lasers and moving platforms, with the occasional enemy thrown in to make things interesting.
  • Lasers do a high amount of damage. Damage-boosting through them is possible, but not recommended.
  • The key to many of the puzzles is timing. Lasers can be blocked by moving platforms or turned off temporarily by striking pink crystals.
Boss fight vs. Arcane Golem (Timekeeper) is at 5:57 in the video.
Stage 10: Cloud Ruins
  • Ghost enemies travel vertically until they are in line with you, then fly forward horizontally. (They do not turn around, so if you end up behind them, they will fly away from you.) These are great for Cloudstepping or Rope Darting off of.
  • During the Sky Serpent chase sequences, keep moving forward as fast as you can. Use the Rope Dart wherever possible to gain speed.
Boss fight vs. Sky Serpent is at 8:26 in the video.
Stage 11: Underworld

Basically hell.

Boss fight vs. Demon General (Barma’thazel) is at 6:18 in the video.
Music Note 1: Key of Hope

This is a good music note to start with, since it's available right away and takes you in the direction of something else you need to collect.
  • 0:42 - Enter the portal farthest to the left, which takes you to Autumn Hills. Climb out of the underground cavern.
  • 1:30 - When you reach the surface (screen with the fireflies), head left until you're forced to pass through a time portal.
  • 2:49 - Travel one more screen to the left, pass through the time portal back to the future, and enter the new path that has opened up to your right. Travel through this new underground area until you find the Key of Hope.
Music Note 2: Key of Strength
  • 0:05 - From the screen where you collected the Key of Hope, head left. Continue heading left all the way to the Ninja Village.
  • 1:57 - Talk to the Ninja Master to get the Astral Seed. (You must be in the past to do this; there's a time portal to the left if necessary.) Then, head to Tower of Time HQ via the nearest Shop Portal (the one in Autumn Hills where you got the Climbing Claws).
  • 3:11 - Enter the portal to Howling Grotto (third from the left). Follow the only path you can take (it'll take you right, quite far up, then left).
  • 3:57 - When you see a time portal, stay in the future and take the exit at the very top of the room. A couple of screens later, you will encounter a river with a strong current. This will take you to an underground tunnel beneath Quillshroom Marsh.
  • 4:38 - When the river ends, take the path to the right. This is a shortcut to Searing Crags. Just beyond the Searing Crags portal (which will activate as you approach it), you will pass through a time portal into the past. Ride the air currents up from here and pass through another time portal into the future. Continue upward to the next screen.
  • 5:49 - Use the circular time portal to travel to the past, then travel to the top of the tall chamber you're in. Exit upward, then travel two screens to the left to the boss room where Colos and Suses are. Stand in front of the dirt mound and press "up" to plant the Astral Seed in their flower bed.
  • 6:48 - Return to the circular time portal at the bottom of the tall chamber, travel to the future, and return to the boss room. Pluck the Astral Tea Leaves and the Power Thistle from the flower bed.
  • 8:02 - Use the circular time portal to travel to the past and return to the boss room yet again. Give Colos and Suses the Power Thistle. They will blast you to a new part of the Searing Crags that you haven't been to yet. Make your way through this new area until you find the Key of Strength.
Music Note 3: Key of Love (New Area: Sunken Shrine)
  • 0:04 - From the screen where you collected the Key of Strength, head down and enter the Shop Portal to return to Tower of Time HQ. Enter the portal farthest to the left (Autumn Hills). Climb out of the underground cavern and head left all the way to the Ninja Village.
  • 3:47 - Talk to the Ninja Master to get the Power of True Sight. (You must be in the past to do this; there's a time portal to the left if necessary.) Then, head to Tower of Time HQ via the nearest Shop Portal (the one in Autumn Hills where you got the Climbing Claws).
  • 5:02 - Enter the portal to Howling Grotto (third from the left). Follow the only path you can take (it'll take you right, quite far up, then left). When you see a time portal, travel to the past and head back the way you came. At the bottom of the previous room (the really tall one with the air current), a new path has opened up to the right. Follow this path to the end of the stage, where you fought the Emerald Golem. Ride the large air current up to Quillshroom Marsh. Travel right until you pass the first screen transition to the right.
  • 9:01 - Drop off the ledge. (If you're in the future at this point, travel two screens to the right, use the time portal, and then return here in the past.) Jump into the quicksand pit in the bottom left corner of this screen. This will take you to a secret area. Partway through, you will find the Magic Seashell on a pedestal. Collect it and continue to the right until you return to the surface. Use the Shop Portal on this screen to return to Tower of Time HQ.
  • 10:43 - Enter the portal to Howling Grotto (third from the left) and take the same path as before. This time, when you see the time portal, move past it and make your way to the exit that's partway up on the left side of the room. Travel along this path until you find another time portal.
  • 13:12 - Before passing through the time portal on this screen, you want to be in the past. (If you're not, travel a little bit to the left and jump into the nearest pit to find another time portal.) When you pass through the portal into the future, the path in front of you will be open. Jump into the water and sink down until you reach a screen with multiple exits.
  • 13:54 - You're in an underwater maze. If you have the Magic Seashell, the correct exit on each screen will start to sparkle, and the music will get louder as you approach it. (If you don't have the Magic Seashell, or you don't feel like following the cues, the correct sequence of exits is as follows: upper right, down, down, lower right (exiting right), left bottom (exiting down), right, down, down.) After exiting the maze, follow the tunnel to the Sunken Shrine area. Travel right, activate the Sunken Shrine portal, and continue right.
  • 14:56 - This is the hub screen for the Sunken Shrine area. Follow the upper-left path first. This is a long path with lots of enemies and time-travel puzzles. Near the end, you'll collect the Lightfoot Tabi (footwear that allows you to run across liquid surfaces; you'll need this to survive the remaining parts of this stage). Continue until you return to the main room with the large door.
  • 18:58 - There are two exits at the bottom of this screen leading to two separate paths. You can do these in either order, but you must do both. One leads to the Moon Crest and the other to the Sun Crest. Once you have both, the large door in the main room will open and the Key of Love will be yours.
Music Note 4: Key of Chaos + All Phobekins (New Areas: Dark Cave & Rivière Turquoise)

This is a long segment because there's a lot to do. This is the most convenient time to collect all three of the missing Phobekins, so we're going to do that before grabbing the Key of Chaos. We'll also be visiting a new area and collecting an item we'll need later.

Boss fight vs. Butterfly Matriarch is at 28:22 in the video.
  • 0:23 - After the giant doors close in the Sunken Shrine, head left and return to the Howling Grotto. Exit the long water tunnel and continue left all the way to Bamboo Creek. Continue along this path until you get to the top of the tall waterfall.
  • 2:58 - Use your wingsuit to glide to the far side of the waterfall, where a small opening exits to the right. At the end of this new area, you'll find the Phobekin Claustro. Once you've recovered Claustro, return to the top of the waterfall, travel one screen to the left, and use the Shop Portal to return to Tower of Time HQ.
  • 5:08 - Use the leftmost portal to return to Autumn Hills. Climb out of the underground cavern, then use the time-bubble fireflies to head upward. Exit to the right and continue all the way to the end of Autumn Hills. When you reach the entrance to the Forlorn Temple, jump down to the catacombs the same way you did the first time you reached this area. Travel all the way to the boss room where you fought the Necromancer/Ruxxtin. Move one screen to the right, use the time portal to travel to the future, and return to the boss room. Interact with the giant tomb to collect Ruxxtin's Amulet. (You'll need this to access the Cloud Ruins, where one of the Phobekins is hiding.)
  • 14:42 - Head left and backtrack through the level until you reach the screen with two jumping demons, a time portal beam, and a murky stream running along the bottom of the screen.
  • 17:33 - Head one screen to the left and destroy the breakable blocks to access the stream of water. Swim two screens to the right, jump down the hole, and continue until you arrive at the Dark Cave.
  • 18:04 - Jump off the left side of the platform and Rope Dart the ring to exit left. Make your way to the end of the Dark Cave. (When you find your path blocked by a shut door in the floor, head back to the right and look for a path leading upward; this will take you to a crystal you can hit to open it.)
  • 19:07 - You're now in Rivière Turquoise, a brand new area. The path to the end is fairly straightforward, but involves some tricky platforming and puzzles involving cannon-like plants that shoot you in a straight line (similar to the cannon barrels in Donkey Kong Country). The large, blue flowers will bounce you at right angles when you're in flight; you can turn these back and forth by striking them with your sword. (Many of the puzzles here involve placing the flowers in the correct configuration before cannoning yourself to the next area.)
  • 28:22 - At the end of Rivière Turquoise, you'll fight a boss called the Butterfly Matriarch. After winning the fight, you'll obtain the Magic Firefly (needed later). Use the plant-cannon to return to the entrance of the boss area. Move one screen to the right and use the Shop Portal to return to Tower of Time HQ.
  • 31:41 - Use the rightmost portal to travel to Glacial Peak. Climb out of the cavern you're in. When you reach the surface, you'll see Ruxxtin's Staff standing a little to your left. Talk to the staff twice to be transported to the Cloud Ruins. Travel through the Cloud Ruins until you find the Phobekin Acro on a floating platform in the midst of a large pit (he's nearly impossible to miss). After rescuing him, continue forward until you find a Shop Portal. Return to Tower of Time HQ.
  • 42:41 - Use the portal that's second from the right to travel to Searing Crags. Move two screens to the right and you'll see the Phobekin Pyro on the far side of a pool of lava. Use the Lightfoot Tabi to cross the lava, rescue the Phobekin, then continue forward across more lava. Keep going until you reach the Underworld.
  • 43:31 - Three screens into the Underworld, you'll see a Shop Portal that you can use to save your progress. Push forward until you reach the next screen that has a save point, then move one screen to the right. Use the Lightfoot Tabi to run across the lava and exit this screen to the right. You're now on a new path that will lead you straight to the Key of Chaos.
Music Note 5: Key of Symbiosis (New Area: Elemental Skylands)

Boss fight vs. Clockwork Concierge is at 18:55 in the video.
  • 0:04 - On the screen where you collected the Key of Chaos, use the Shop Portal to return to Tower of Time HQ. Use the portal that's second from the right to travel to Searing Crags. This time, head left through the underground path to Quillshroom Marsh. When you reach the underground river, head up, then proceed forward through the level until you reach the boss room (where you fought the Queen of Quills, a.k.a. the Monk). Your Magic Firefly will break the curse on the Monk and she will leave. Head left one screen and use the Shop Portal to return to Tower of Time HQ.
  • 3:58 - Use the rightmost portal to travel to Glacial Peak. Climb out of the cavern you're in, head left, and backtrack through the level until you reach a screen with a circular time portal. Travel to the past, then move left two screens, where you'll find the Monk. After you talk to her, she'll break the ice on two lanterns above.
  • 6:41 - Go back to the circular time portal, travel to the future, then return here. This time, you'll find Manfred (the Sky Serpent) trapped in ice. Use the de-iced lanterns to reach the platform above Manfred. Destroy the ice here to free him.
  • 7:28 - Choose "yes" during your conversation with Manfred to have him fly you to the Elemental Skylands, a new area made up of four sub-areas where you need to disable four generators. Attack all of the glowing lanterns around a generator to disable it. (During the flying sequences, you control Manfred and will be attacked by cannons and flying robots. You can also take damage by crashing into walls and other solid objects. Your attack button causes Manfred to breathe fire; hold the button down to charge up a powerful shot that will destroy every enemy it touches.)
  • 18:40 - After disabling the fourth generator and exiting the Fire Skyland, you'll fight the Clockwork Concierge. After winning the fight, you'll get the Key of Symbiosis.
Music Note 6: Key of Courage (New Areas: Forlorn Temple & Corrupted Future)

Boss fight vs. the Demon King is at 12:45 in the video.
  • 0:36 - After collecting the Key of Symbiosis, you'll be returned to Glacial Peak. Head two screens to the right and one screen up. Use the Shop Portal to return to Tower of Time HQ.
  • 1:08 - Use the leftmost portal to return to Autumn Hills. Climb out of the underground cavern, then use the time-bubble fireflies to head upward. Exit to the right and continue all the way through Autumn Hills to the Forlorn Temple area.
  • 3:57 - If you're in the past at this point, use the time portal to shift into the future. Otherwise, just continue forward. If you've rescued all the Phobekins (which we did in the Key of Chaos section of this guide), the bridge will be repaired and you can enter the Forlorn Temple. When you reach the end of this area, you'll fight the Demon King and obtain his crown.
  • 16:32 - From the boss room, head two screens to the right. You'll exit into Bamboo Creek. Head down out of the tower and continue right until you find a Shop Portal. Return to Tower of Time HQ.
  • 17:23 - This time, instead of going left to the portal room, head right to a different room with a single inactive portal. Interact with the portal twice to activate it, then use it to travel to the Corrupted Future. The fireflies here will produce "time windows" when attacked, which you need to open in order to progress forward. The Key of Courage is at the end of this new area.
  • 20:51 - After you collect the Key of Courage, a giant monster will appear and chase you back through the level. Use the Rope Dart to grab rings and fireflies to stay ahead of it. Attacking the fireflies will open time windows to the left that enable you to flee in a relatively straight line. Once you reach the portal and arrive back at Tower of Time HQ, return to the large portal room and interact with the Music Box twice. Your music notes will fly into place and you'll be able to access the final stage of the game.

Tips & Tricks
The game does a pretty good job of teaching you the basics, both through instructional text and level design. Here are some additional tips and info that may not be immediately obvious.

Movement
  • Cloudstepping is this game's version of a double jump. You are able to execute a midair jump after hitting an interactive object (lantern, enemy, projectile, etc.) with your sword while in the air.
    • You can alternate between hitting and jumping to stay in the air indefinitely.
    • For extra height, jump and hit an object while on the way up. Then, you can perform a second jump when you reach the peak height of the first jump.
  • While swimming, you naturally sink downward when you're not dashing or pressing the "jump" button. Hold the "down" button to sink slightly faster.
Combat & Health
  • Each sword attack strikes everything within attack range. You can damage or destroy multiple enemies with a single attack.
  • Each sword attack persists for a few frames after you initiate the attack, and the damage hit box moves with you. You can jump, run or turn around during the attack to expand the range of your sword damage.
  • Crouching allows you to attack closer to the ground, both with your sword and shurikens. This can help you avoid projectiles and take out smaller enemies.
  • If you buy the Strike of the Ninja upgrade, you can destroy enemy projectiles. This is very helpful for avoiding damage.
  • The Demon's Bane upgrade gives you a passively charged sword attack that does triple damage. This allows you to one-shot any monster except bosses. However, you won't be able to acquire it until quite far into the game.
  • Different hazards cause different amounts of damage:
    • Contact with enemies or their projectiles typically does 1 damage.
    • Spikes cause 3 damage.
    • Getting crushed by moving walls, platforms or doors is instant death, regardless of how much health you have. Falling into lava, bottomless pits and some other hazards is also instant death.
    • There are several upgrades that improve your health. The Path of Resilience upgrade reduces incoming damage.
Enemies
  • Most (not all) enemies can be destroyed with one hit, either from your sword or a shuriken. (One notable exception is the slow-moving green monster, which requires three hits.)
  • To kill the large plant monsters that rise up out of the ground, strike the pinkish spot on the front of the monster. (This will be at a different height on each one.)
  • See the walkthrough sections of this guide for more tips on specific enemies.
Upgrades
  • To maximise your movement and attack potential, unlock the following upgrades as soon as possible (some of these have prerequisites not listed):
    • Strike of the Ninja (allows you to destroy enemy projectiles)
    • Energy Shuriken (long-range attack)
    • Prepared Mind (upgrades Energy Shuriken to pierce one target)
    • Second Wind (gives you a midair jump if you take damage in the air)
    • Aerobatics Warrior (gives you a downward attack while gliding with the wingsuit; very helpful, and also required to access certain secret areas)
  • Until all upgrades have been unlocked, it's worthwhile to hit every lantern and kill every enemy to collect as many Time Shards as possible.
    • Enemies will respawn after being destroyed if their spawn point scrolls off and back onto the screen. However, they are far less likely to drop Time Shards the second time around.
    • Keep an eye out for large Time Shard deposits. These look like large crystals and are usually found in hidden areas. Destroying one of these gives you 65 Time Shards.
Equipment
  • Climbing Claws (wall climbing ability; acquired in Autumn Hills):
    • By repeatedly jumping and holding down the movement button that points toward the wall, you can ascend walls really fast.
    • While clinging to a wall, your attacks will point away from the wall. To attack toward the wall, you will need to jump off the wall.
  • Wingsuit (gliding ability; acquired in Howling Grotto):
    • Buy the Aerobatics Warrior upgrade as soon as you can after getting the Wingsuit. This gives you a downward attack that not only destroys enemies, but bounces you upward when you attack an enemy or a lantern. (If you do this while riding an air current, you will bounce very high.)
    • Since they're both triggered by the same button, juggling Cloudstep and the Wingsuit takes practice. Cloudstep will always take priority over the Wingsuit. If you have a Cloudstep jump "stored," press the jump button once to trigger the jump; then, release and press the jump button again to engage the Wingsuit.
  • Rope Dart (grappling hook; acquired in Searing Crags):
    • The Rope Dart can grab walls, rings, lanterns, enemies...nearly anything.
      • If you grab a wall, you will cling to that wall.
      • If you grab a lantern or enemy, you will fly to it and deliver a sword blow. You can then Cloudstep to stay in the air if necessary.
      • If you grab a ring, you will slingshot past the ring at high speed. Engage your Wingsuit to fly a long distance.
  • Lightfoot Tabi (shoes that let you run on liquid surfaces; acquired in Sunken Shrine):
    • With the appropriate button held down, you can run across water, lava, quicksand, and other liquids as long as you keep moving. The moment you stop (or release the button), you will sink. (If you're on lava, this is instant death!)
    • You can jump and change directions while using the Lightfoot Tabi as long as you're moving left or right when you're in contact with the liquid surface.
Secrets
  • Keep an eye out for destructible blocks built into walls or other structures. Destroying these often leads to secret areas.
  • Some paths are open only in the past or only in the future.
  • There are 45 optional collectibles called Power Seals hidden throughout the game. These look like green, spinning coins with triangles on them. If you collect all 45, you will be able to open a chest in the shop that gives you a new kind of shuriken that boomerangs around you instead of travelling in a straight line. (You may or may not like the new shuriken better. Once you learn how to use it, it can be very effective at clearing out nearby enemies, and it allows you to attack through walls. However, the range is much shorter than that of the normal shuriken.)
    • It's possible to complete the game without seeing a single Power Seal, since they're all hidden on side paths that branch off from the main path. Explore to find them.
    • Sometimes, a faint image of a Power Seal will be incorporated into the background of a level. This indicates that the path to a Power Seal is hidden nearby.
    • You can purchase a map upgrade that shows you exactly where the Power Seals are located. (However, this doesn't tell you how to get to them!)
