Description
The doors should have held them. The flames should have quelled them. But a behemoth ripped the gates from their housings, and the infected had mutated in hideous ways we weren't prepared for. We locked ourselves away, in the very back of our city. Finally the horde has grown still. Now we need to regroup, reclaim, and slay the behemoth so that we might rebuild our home.

------
From the Ashes is a tactical map of medium difficulty. Without the ability to construct you must retake an infected city, and slay a Giant, fielding only the units you can find in the map or outfit with a basic 'equipment' system. Scavenge ruined buildings for supplies and survivors, and help forge the fate of the colony.
Note: This map features a soft-cap of ~40 days, if you take too long to kill the Giant, it may well spell your doom.

This is the first map, of the first chapter of the Wings of the Phoenix campaign. (It was formerly a stand-alone map, I'd say one well worth playing even if you don't touch the campaign.)
Chapter 1, "Fanning Flames" includes...
Map 1 - "From the Ashes"
Map 2 - "Molding Merit"
Map 3 - "Around Every Corner"
Map 4 - "The Roanoke Rout"
Map 5 - "Bridges, Nowhere"

Which can be found in one of two places:
The Wings of the Phoenix collection, which includes every map in the campaign including variants, available below:

As well as The Wings of the Phoenix chapter 1 collection, which includes only the 5 maps in chapter 1 (no variants), available below:

What is the issue you're having? Custom games can be accessed from the main menu by going into New Game > Custom Game. WotP would probably be toward the bottom of the list since its sorted alphabetically. Does the map not start?

If the confusion lies in the inability to construct things, that is by design. The map is focused around managing your units and slowly building up a larger army to take on the giant with, using only resources and manpower you find within the city.

It mostly comes down to clearing cautiously at first. I recommend clearing out the region immediately in front of the command center first, then hugging the left wall until you get to the clinic , which will always give you some new workers for deploying more units. There's a custom command center button for making 'equipment' which gives you those units as a 'bonus' that can be deployed from the CC.

Thanks for the map, Joekirk. This is what hero-missons should have been like in the official campaign. This was absolutly awesome. Having the choice to pick out of a few options on every step of that mission is an element I just love in games (like f.e. FTL).

I made it through on my second try after being stomped by a horde I underestimated "a little bit".

Thanks for the heads up, I forgot to capitalize a variable when I corrected this issue a month ago, making 'The Match is Struck' play instead of the 'The Pyre of Humanity Burns On' message at the end after visiting the mayor. It should now correctly account for you visiting the palace before killing the giant.

Hm, there should be two variants of the ending depending upon whether you've visited the palace or not. I thought I had corrected the issue that made the Non-visit ending play after visiting, but I might need to take another look at it.
