I found X-Com 2 much more difficult, much more pressure on time, both tactically and strategically and has a very annoying rng.
Battlemech requires a lot of grind through the campaign, the little difficulty skulls are warnings - ignore them and you get quickly swamped. When you are comfortable with the technical aspects of the game and are on your way to building a heavier lance of stompy mechs, you can take on missions with equal tonnage/difficulty rating.
There's no time limit that I can see to complete the campaign, unlike X-Com. The tactical aspect does have similarities; you have to use cover to survive, there's no overwatch, but you can defer turns to later in the round.
And once in the mid-campaign, morale and called shots/vigilance are essential in taking down the enemy.
