History:
This first Burkinabe site is covered with high walls and covers 11,130 m2. It is the best preserved of the ten fortresses in the Lobi region. It is also part of a larger ensemble of about 100 stone enclosures, reflecting the power of the trans-Saharan gold trade. At least a thousand years old according to recent discoveries, these ruins are located near the borders of Togo and Ghana.

The site was occupied by the Lohron or Koulango who controlled the extraction and processing of gold in the region at the peak of this gold mining (XIVth to XVIIth century).

A lot of mystery surrounds this site which a large part has not yet been searched. During its long history, Loropeni seems to have been abandoned several times. The final abandonment occurred between the beginning and the middle of the 19th century. This site still promises a lot of information.
