TT Radar Fan-Beam Delay-line

Description
A simple Radar using WW2 radar principles of "Delay Line" memory.

Features:
- 6 Sensor Fan Beam Radar for detecting ground or flying targets. It cannot be flown under!
- Delay Line Memory System for ignoring static objects

The principle of Delay Line memory is that when a measurement is taken, the measurement gets sent round a loop or "Delay line" that delays the measurement by how long it takes to rotate the dish exactly one full turn. After that, the delayed signal and the measurement at that exact time are compared. This then allows the difference between what was there and is there now to be measured.

As only the difference is detected this type of radar is never disturbed by readings from the ground, and only detects moving objects like aircraft, regardless of how high they are! As long as nothing obstructs the view, it's impossible to "fly under the radar" with this type of design. The machine you see here has sensors pointing both up and DOWN, as it doesn't care about ground detection.

possible uses:
- Mount to a ship, on a moving object that has relatively sparse surroundings this would be good at detecting other vessels or inbound land.
- Fix to the ground, as a sea/land/air detector.

possible improvements...?
- with a bigger screen, the output from the summed sensors could be fed into a rotating display with multiple distance lines. This could be tricky to get right however since it is scanning several angles at once.
- movement compensation - this would be very difficult to do, but I don't think impossible now we have directional velocity sensors.

edit: Now with added buzzers to make it a bit more entertaining to mess with. You know when it's detected you now even if you aren't looking at the screen!

If you're going to use this as is I would much rather you provide a link to where you got the radar from.

It is broken for me. The green dot does a 360 all the time.

It is mind blowing that it actually works, and works so well!

Excellent can’t wait to mess with this. A thought though is that it would be awesome if something like this makes it onto the dev roadmap. I think it would be nice to see rescue missions where you don’t get an exact location but rather a “search the area” mission. Having the money/parts to have a radar to help complete these missions would be a great game milestone/goal.

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THIS IN A SHIP OR AIRCRAFT
