Add CRT Scanlines to Iconoclasts!
Készítő: Jinx
This guide shows you how to use ReShade to add CRT scanline effects (like an old TV) to Iconoclasts.

Installing & Configuring ReShade
Iconoclasts is a beautiful game, but I feel like pixel art "pops" a little better with CRT effects. So I decided to see what I could do with ReShade, a post-processing injector similar to SweetFX.

Guess what? It works! And in my opinion it looks fantastic. The CRT shader in ReShade has a lot of settings, though, and the default settings aren't so good for Iconoclasts. So in this tutorial I am going to walk you through not only installing ReShade, but to configuring it as well.

The first step is to download ReShade[reshade.me] from the dev's website.

Then double-click on the .exe. This pops up.

Click "select game". Then browse to the game's install directory.

Once you're in the directory, select "Iconoclasts.exe"

Now back in ReShade select Direct X 8/9 (11 might work, too)

Agree to the effects download.

Now deselect everything except CRT.fx

And it's installed!

We aren't done yet, though. The default CRT settings in ReShade aren't so great for Iconoclasts. They're probably meant for low resolution games that you'd play on an emulator. Unlike old NES games, Iconoclasts runs at a higher resolution, so we need our CRT shader to be "HD" as well.

Press Shift-F2 (this may be Home in new versions) in-game to open the ReShade config menu. After a brief tutorial you'll be presented with the settings menu. You might want to set a key like Scroll Lock to toggle the effect. Now open the CRT settings and change them to the following:

Obviously you can tweak these settings to taste. If it's still not quite clear enough for you, for example, a boost in resolution might be in order. We're basically simulating not an old CRT television, but a high-resolution computer CRT that would match the game's resolution closer. And the results are much better!

Anyway, hope some of you enjoy this!

Incredible! Thank you for the guide.

Appreciate the guide but unfortunately those scanlines are uneven. Reshade's scanlines are incredibly difficult to get working correctly and they need to be set up on a game by game basis. You need to know the exact internal resolution of the game in order to set the right paramaters in reshade.

Yes, it should probably work with most games I'd think. This is actually a rework of my tutorial from Dead Cells. And I've tried Hollow Knight as well. And before this I used SweetFX with Freedom Planet and Starbound so ReShade probably works with those, too. The only tricky part is making sure you install the right version (Direct X or OpenGL). If you aren't sure which you can always guess, I think Direct X is more common. Sometimes there are files in the game directory with "dx" or "ogl" etc. in the name that might give you a hint as to which install to use.

So does this software work for other games as well? Like I can use it for similar effects on other pixel games?

Great job with this. Would be cool to see screenshots for other good ReShade settings to use for this game. This one really takes the cake!

Yeah ReShade can do all sorts of stuff. I use it with Hollow Knight, too. Not for scanlines, though. I download the vibrance filter and boost the color saturation because it looks a little washed out for my tastes.
