Description
Era - 1960s / 1970s - Freestyle Wrestling

181-1, 97-5, numbers marking Dan Gable's records as a collegiate wrestler for Iowa State and as a member of the US national freestyle team, numbers marking one of the most remarkable runs in the history of the sport, and one that culminated in a Gold Medal in the 1972 Olympics. Shortly later, in 1976 Gable would join the University of Iowa as the coach for their program, and would again find unparalleled success.

Gable was known for his relentless style, endless stamina and a singular determination to never cede a point.
The hand-over-hand grip is commonly referred to as a Gable Grip in his honor, and Gable is also known as an innovator in his execution of the double leg takedown.
