Era - 1980s /1990s - Greco Roman Wrestling

The greatest Greco Roman wrestler in modern history, Aleksandr Karelin was born in Siberia, unnaturally large even as a baby. He lived a vigorous life, beginning his pursuit of wrestling at 13, and despite breaking his leg in a tournament, Karelin pushed on and did not lose a match between 1981 and 1987, and avenged his loss to Igor Rostorotsky shortly after, setting another streak from 1987 to 2000. He faced Rulon Gardner in the 2000 Olympics, losing in a controvercial upset.

Karelin was known as the Experiment for his incredible physicality, demonstrating a level of strength above that of even his fellow elite athletes. He was best known in competition for his Karelin Lift, a devistating deadlift drop that often netted Karelin pins from his opponents rolling over to avoid it, all the more impressive considering the size of his weight class.
