BIOS: Megafauna 2nd Edition

Description
Summary and Rating

Semi-asymmetrical competitive strategy game depicting the rise and fall of ancestral life. Medium-Long length, engaging, and not afraid to throw some complex mechanics our way. 4/5 for me.

Full Description
Bios: Megafauna starts where the predecessor game Bios: Genesis left off, with the invasion of the land on the daybreak of the Phanerozoic eon. Starting as either a plant, mollusk, insect, or vertebral skeletal type, your flapping, paddling, and squawking carnivores and herbivores make a beachhead on one of the drifting continental plates in the Cambrian, Their struggle for terrestrial dominance may eventually include language-based consciousness. Although this achievement elevated a certain mammal species to notoriety, in your game things may occur differently.

This second edition of Bios: Megafauna is an evolutionary descendant of American Megafauna but as a part of the Bios series of games it is linked to the game Bios: Genesis. It plays well independently but if you have both games you can let the end state of a game of Bios: Genesis affect the starting state of a game of Bios: Megafauna. A successor game, called Bios: Origins (which would be a descendant of Origin), is planned to cover the events of the Quaternary period including the rise of ideas and technology.

Workshop Description

All assets were gotten from other sources. What I've done:

**Arranged everything into (what I hope is) organised and clear placements with plenty of room to do with as you wish.
**Added minimal scripting elements
**Recoloured and remodelled certain objects to reflect Tabletop Simulator's colour selections
**Setup the game as best described in the rulebook, using the historical order for landmasses

Information

Rules: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SwTVQ4NH6fy4boeVl9WdfCWcvVHYUuoIChG17T-tjKk/
Creator: Sierra Madre Games ( http://sierra-madre-games.eu/index.html )
BoardGameGeek Link: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/221769/bios-megafauna-second-edition
Game Length: 90-180 minutes
Recommended Ages: 12+
Players: 1-4
Complexity: ~3/5.

NOTE: I personally found the rulebook rather difficult to follow, as it's not laid out in such a way that you can read it from top-to-bottom. You might want to get someone to explain it to you instead of learning it yourself.

I recommend checking out Sierra's site, they have many other equally thrilling games. Kissing butt aside, they're my favourite board game design company.

Scripting

Minimalist scripting was done. A 'Setup Game' button was made which shuffles everything, makes the two mutation decks and places the ET cards on the appropriate era. If I find the time, additional scripting plans are:

**Make Mutation Decks resupply automatically
**Perform end-of-era fossils automatically
**End-of-game scoring
**Added quality-of-life stuff, such as snap points on all biomes.

Credit

All other assets were retrieved from the VASSAL module, available here: http://www.vassalengine.org/wiki/Module:Bios:_Megafauna_(second_edition)

Creature models gotten from: http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=692742626 the workshop upload of the first edition. I personally like them better than the 3D models.

I also decided to take on the themes from the above workshop item, using the table extenders to place player's objects on, it just plain looks nice. ( http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=483801783 )

Addendum

All feedback, suggestions and criticism alike are welcome and appreciated. If you encounter any problems with the upload, be sure to let me know.

Additionally, if you happen to have access to higher-res DPI scanning and own the hardcopy of the game, I would greatly appreciate it if you'd be willing to send the assets to me so that the flavour text is more readable.

Cheers

Is Laurentia Craton in here? Many people below asked about it.

I used this as a base and made all the cards super pretty, thanks for all the hard ground work!

Organ Cubes should not be unlimited

The market refresh works like this: After a player is done with their turn, some cards will be missing in the market. Everything slides to the closest free spot to the left and then new cards are drawn.

Hi Esoudiere! Great work but unfortunately not playble at the moment without the Laurentia Craton :-/ Any chance that you may fix this?

If you catch me online, hit me up and we can work on a few other issues. I think I can even teach the game.
